Jack Jersey - In The Still Of The Night (1974) - Lp

Jack de Nijs (Tjimahi, 18 juli 1941 - Roosendaal, 26 mei 1997) was een Nederlandse zanger, componist, arrangeur, tekstdichter en producer van lichte muziek die voor nationale en internationale artiesten werkte. Als zanger is hij bekend geworden onder het pseudoniem Jack Jersey.
De Nijs werd geboren te Tjimahi bij Bandung (Nederlands-Indië) als zoon van een militair bij het KNIL, die getrouwd was met Carolien Ferron.In 1951 repatrieerde het gezin De Nijs naar Nederland waar het een jaar in het latere Molukse woonoord Kamp Wouw (Ambonezenkamp te Wouw) woonde en zich in 1952 in de nieuwbouw Fatimawijk te Roosendaal vestigde. Hij besloot voortaan in het Engels te zingen en veranderde zijn artiestennaam Ruby Nash in Jack Jersey (de achternaam ontleende hij aan het eiland Jersey).

Zijn nummer I'm calling werd in 1973 alarmschijf bij de populaire zeezender Radio Veronica. Het gevolg was een reeks hits, zoals onder andere: In The Still Of The Night, Papa was a poor man.
Na uitblijvend succes als Nederlandstalige zanger verandert hij zijn artiestennaam in Jack Jersey en brengt hij in 1973 de single I'm Calling uit, met een sterk aan Elvis Presley refererend geluid. Een jaar later volgt de groote doorbraak met het singeltje "Don't Break This Heart". Het album "In The Still Of The Night" uit 1974 wordt goud, en stond in de Album top 10, op nummer 3.

Tot en met 1977 scoort hij zo'n vijftien hits met deze sound met als grootste succes Papa Was A Poor Man. 

Zelfs de Jordanaires (Elvis Presley's backing group) verlenen af en toe medewerking aan zijn songs.

Acker Bilk En Zijn Strijkorkest - 20 Romantische Sfeer Melodieen 2 (1980) - Lp

Bernard Stanley "Acker" Bilk, MBE (28 January 1929 – 2 November 2014) was an English clarinettist and vocalist known for his appearance – goatee, bowler hat and striped waistcoat – and breathy, vibrato-rich, lower-register clarinet style.
Bilk played with friends on the Bristol jazz circuit and in 1951 moved to London to play with Ken Colyer's band. Bilk disliked London, so returned west and formed his own band in Pensford called the Chew Valley Jazzmen, which was renamed the Bristol Paramount Jazz Band when they moved to London in 1951. Their agent then booked them for a six-month gig in Düsseldorf, Germany, playing in a beer bar seven hours a night, seven nights a week. During this time, Bilk and the band developed their distinctive style and appearance, complete with striped-waistcoats and bowler hats.
After returning from Germany, Bilk became based in Plaistow, London, and his band played in London jazz clubs. It was from here that Bilk became part of the boom in Trad jazz in the United Kingdom in the late 1950s. In 1960, their single "Summer Set" (a pun on their home county), co-written by Bilk and pianist Dave Collett, reached number five on the UK Singles Chart,and began a run of 11 chart hit singles. In 1961 "Acker Bilk and His Paramount Jazz Band" appeared at the Royal Variety Performance.

Bilk was not an internationally known musician until 1962, when the experimental use of a string ensemble on one of his albums and the inclusion of a composition of his own as its keynote piece won him an audience outside the UK. He had composed a melody, entitled "Jenny" after his daughter, but was asked to change the title to "Stranger on the Shore" for use in a British television series. He went on to record it as the title track of a new album in which his deep and quavering clarinet was backed by the Leon Young String Chorale.
The single was not only a big hit in the United Kingdom, where it stayed on the charts for 55 weeks, helped by Bilk being the subject of the TV show This Is Your Life, but also topped the American charts. As a result, Bilk was the second British artist to have a single in the number-one position on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart. (Vera Lynn was the first, with "Auf Wiederseh'n Sweetheart" in 1952.) "Stranger on the Shore" sold over one million copies, and was awarded a gold disc. At the height of his career, Bilk's public relations workers were known as the "Bilk Marketing Board", a pun on the Milk Marketing Board.
Bilk recorded a series of albums in Britain that were also released successfully in the United States (on the Atlantic Records subsidiary Atco), including a collaboration, Together, with the Danish jazz pianist and composer Bent Fabric ("The Alley Cat"). Bilk's success tapered off when British rock and roll made its big international impact beginning in 1964 and he shifted direction to the cabaret circuit. He finally had another chart success in 1976 with "Aria", which went to number five in the United Kingdom. In May 1977 Bilk and his Paramount Jazz Band provided the interval act for the Eurovision Song Contest. His last chart appearance was in 1978, when the TV-promoted album released on Pye/Warwick, Evergreen, reached 17 in a 14-week album chart run. In the early 1980s, Bilk and his signature hit were newly familiar, due to "Stranger on the Shore" being used in the soundtrack to Sweet Dreams, the film biography of country music singer Patsy Cline. "Aria" featured as a central musical motif in the 2012 Polish film Mój rower (pl).

Bilk continued to tour with his Paramount Jazz Band, as well as performing concerts with his two contemporaries, Chris Barber and Kenny Ball, both of whom were born in 1930, as "The 3Bs".

Bill Haley & The Comets - Rock Around The Clock (1968) - Lp

Bill Haley & His Comets were an American rock and roll band, founded in 1952 and continued until Haley's death in 1981. The band, also known as Bill Haley and the Comets and Bill Haley's Comets (and variations thereof), was the earliest group of white musicians to bring rock and roll to the attention of America and the rest of the world. From late 1954 to late 1956, the group placed nine singles in the Top 20, one of those a number one and three more in the Top Ten.
Bandleader Bill Haley had previously been a country music performer; after recording a country and western-styled version of "Rocket 88", a rhythm and blues song, he changed musical direction to a new sound which came to be called rock and roll.

Although several members of the Comets became famous, Bill Haley remained the star. With his spit curl and the band's matching plaid dinner jackets and energetic stage behavior, many fans consider them to be as revolutionary in their time as the Beatles or the Rolling Stones were a decade later.

Haley and his group began playing rock in 1952 and two years later came up with their First million-seling single “Shake, Rattle And Roll”, which was closely followed by “Rock Around The Clock”. This collection of his greatest songs serves as a souvenir of a pop era that came and went with a tumultuous band and all who lived through the fifties remember it with nostalgia and affection.

The 5th Dimension - Let The Sunshine In (1969) - Lp

The 5th Dimension is an American popular music vocal group, whose repertoire includes pop, R&B, soul, jazz, light opera and Broadway—the melange was coined as "Champagne Soul."

Formed as The Versatiles in late 1965, the group changed its name to the hipper "The 5th Dimension". by 1966. They became well-known during the late 1960s and early 1970s.

The five original members were: Billy Davis Jr., Florence LaRue, Marilyn McCoo, Lamonte McLemore, and Ronald Townson. They have recorded for several different labels over their long careers. Their first work appeared on the Soul City label, which was started by Imperial Records/United Artists Records recording artist Johnny Rivers. The group would later record for Bell/Arista Records, ABC Records, and Motown Records.

Some of the songwriters popularized by the 5th Dimension went on to careers of their own, especially Ashford & Simpson, who wrote "California Soul". The group is also notable for having more success with the songs of Laura Nyro than Nyro did herself, particularly with "Stoned Soul Picnic", "Sweet Blindness", "Wedding Bell Blues", "Blowin' Away", and "Save the Country". The group also covered music by well known songwriters such as the song "One Less Bell to Answer", written by Burt Bacharach and Hal David, and the songs and music of Jimmy Webb, who penned their hit "Up, Up and Away", including an entire recording of Webb songs called The Magic Garden.

The 5th Dimension's famed producer, Bones Howe, utilized Bob Alcivar as the singers' vocal arranger, as well as The Wrecking Crew, a renowned group of studio musicians including drummer Hal Blaine, for their recording sessions.

Fats Domino - Fantastic Fats Domino (1976) - Lp

Antoine "Fats" Domino, Jr. (born February 26, 1928) is an American pianist and singer-songwriter of French Creole descent. Five of his records released before 1955 sold over a million copies and were certified as gold records, and he had 35 records in the U.S. Top 40. His musical style is based on traditional rhythm and blues, accompanied by saxophones, bass, piano, electric guitar, and drums.
Domino was born and raised in New Orleans, Louisiana. The Domino family was of French Creole background. Louisiana Creole French was his first language. Antoine was born at home with the assistance of his grandmother, a midwife. His name was initially given as Anthony on his birth certificate but was later corrected. His family were new arrivals in the Lower Ninth Ward from Vacherie, Louisiana.His father was a well-known violinist.

Domino learned to play the piano from his brother-in-law, jazz guitarist Harrison Verrett.
Even after his success, he continued to live in his old neighborhood. His large home was roomy enough for his 13 children, but he still preferred to sleep in a hammock outside.

This album features (Sixteen Of The Greatest Tracks By Fats Domino) and was re-released in the Netherlands for Boek en Plaat on Stateside Records.

Camel - Mirage (1974) - Lp

Camel are an English progressive rock band formed in 1971. Led by founding member Andrew Latimer.
Andrew Latimer (guitar), Andy Ward (drums) and Doug Ferguson (bass) had been playing as a trio called The Brew around the Guildford, Surrey area of England.
On 20 February 1971, they auditioned to be the back-up band to singer/songwriter Phillip Goodhand-Tait and released an album with him in August 1971 titled I Think I'll Write a Song on DJM Records. This would be their first and last album with Goodhand-Tait.
They recruited Peter Bardens (keyboards) and after an initial gig to fulfill a Bardens commitment on 8 October 1971 in Belfast, Northern Ireland under the name of 'Peter Bardens' On', they changed their name to Camel. Their first gig was at Waltham Forest Technical College, London supporting Wishbone Ash on 4 December 1971.

In August 1972 Camel signed with MCA Records and their eponymous debut album Camel (1973) was released six months later. The record was not a success and the band moved to the Deram Records division of Decca Records (UK).
In 1974 they released their second album; the critically acclaimed Mirage, on which Latimer showed he was also adept on flute. Although failing to chart at home, it gained success on the U.S. west coast, prompting a three-month tour there.

Mirage was released on March 1, 1974. It features some of their best-known songs, including "White Rider" and "Lady Fantasy". It is also a showcase for Andrew Latimer's flute, notably on "Supertwister".
There are five tracks on Mirage, two over 9 minutes. Those two are multi-part songs: "Lady Fantasy" and "Nimrodel/The Procession/The White Rider", the latter being about The Lord of the Rings.



The album was released on Gama Records/Deram Records.

The album was voted no. 51 in the Top 100 Prog albums of All Time by readers of Prog magazine in 2014.

Alessi - Driftin’ (1978) - Lp

The Alessi Brothers is an American pop rock singer-songwriter duo, best known for their 1984 hit "Savin' the Day" and also their 1977 hit "Oh Lori". The duo are identical twin brothers, Bill (Billy) Alessi and Bob (Bobby) Alessi (born 12 July 1953, West Hempstead, New York).
One of the finest examples of one-hit wonders is a musical duo called the Alessi Brothers.
Twins Bobby and Billy Alessi  earned European fame in 1975 with a jazzy song called Oh Lori. It hit number 7 in the United Kingdom charts and became a Top Ten success in 17 more countries. Oh Lori is a catchy song about Bobby’s wife (or was it Billy’s?).

With their typical seventies’ hairstyles, the Alessi Brothers became young girls’ idols.
They ditched their relatively unknown producer after Oh Lori because Billy and Bobby wanted to become as famous as The Beach Boys and thought they needed a big name to achieve that. According to Billy, they could get every producer they wanted after Oh Lori, “even the producer of Queen”.
But none of their next attempts made it to the charts, except for Put Away Your Love, which earned an impressive 71st place in the American listings of 1982.

Distressed by the continuing lack of success, the Alessi Brothers kept on changing producers. After their ‘82 album Long Time 
Friends they gave up and started to produce radio and television jingles, working together with Sir Reginald Kenneth Dwight among others.
Now the brothers admit they were too impatient and it was wrong to break with their initial producer in the first place.
The Alessi Brothers made five albums in their career that lasted from 1975 to 1982: Alessi (A&M, 1977), All for a Reason (A&M, 1978), Driftin' (A&M, 1978), Words & Music (A&M, 1979) and Long Time Friends (Qwest, 1982).

Billy and Bobby co-operated with Art Garfunkel on his 1979 Fate for Breakfast, mainly providing the background vocals.
As vocal arrangers the twins helped Deborah Gibson on her 2001 album M.Y.O.B. (which stands for Mind Your Own Business). They also wrote the title track.

The Beatles - With The Beatles (1963) - Lp

With the Beatles is the second studio album by the English rock band the Beatles. It was released on 22 November 1963, on Parlophone, and was recorded four months after the band's debut Please Please Me.
The album features eight original compositions (seven by Lennon–McCartney and "Don't Bother Me", George Harrison's first recorded solo composition and his first released on a Beatles album) and six covers (mostly of Motown, rock and roll, and R&B hits). The cover photograph was taken by the fashion photographer Robert Freeman, and it has been mimicked by several music groups over the years.

The album became the first Beatles album released in North America when it was released in Canada on 25 November under the augmented title Beatlemania! With the Beatles, with additional text on the album cover, and issued only in mono at the time, catalogue number T 6051 (a stereo Canadian release would come in 1968, catalogue number ST 6051).
With The Beatles was unevenly "split" over the group's first two Capitol albums in the United States; nine tracks were issued on Meet the Beatles! (the eight original compositions plus "Till There Was You"), and the remaining five, all "covers", were placed on The Beatles' Second Album.

The album was ranked number 420 on Rolling Stone magazine's list of The 500 Greatest Albums of All Time in 2003, and was included in Robert Dimery's 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die.
