Saskia & Serge - In Nashville U.S.A. (1977) - Lp

Saskia & Serge is een zangduo dat al bijna 50 jaar meedraait in de Nederlandse muziekwereld, mede dankzij verschillende muzikale koerswijzigingen.
Het duo bestaat uit gitarist/zanger Ruud Schaap (Den Helder, 22 maart 1946) en zangeres Trudy van den Berg (Grootebroek, 23 april 1947).
Bij de Loosdrechtse talentenjacht 'Cabaret der Onbekenden' van organisator Max van Praag, won het duo Trudy & Ruud in 1967 de eerste prijs voor het beste Nederlandstalige lied.
In 1969 ging het duo verder onder de naam Saskia & Serge. Hun repertoire bestond uit simpele en onschuldige teksten over de natuur, de liefde en het leven. In 1969 trouwden Saskia & Serge.
In 1975 stopte het duo met hun Nederlandstalig repertoire en ging het verder met country & western.

In 1976 verscheen het eerste country-album, We'll give you everything.
De nieuwe stijl van Saskia & Serge werd ook buiten Nederland gewaardeerd. Als eerste Nederlandse artiesten mochten Saskia & Serge optreden in de beroemde club Grand Ole Opry in de Amerikaanse stad Nashville.
Naar aanleiding van dit optreden werd in Nashville het studioalbum In Nashville, U.S.A. opgenomen dat zowel in Nederland als (in een iets gewijzigde samenstelling) in de Verenigde Staten werd uitgebracht. De single Jambalaya werd een hit in de Verenigde Staten.
Dit optreden is te horen op de door Will Hoebee geproduceerde live-lp In Nashville USA. Door het authentieke Amerikaanse country-geluid maakt de langspeler veel indruk. Van de plaat verschijnen in Nederland de singles Honey I'm Falling In Love Again en When Will I Be Loved.

The Pointer Sisters - The Pointer Sisters (1973) - Lp

The Pointer Sisters are an American R&B singing group from Oakland, California, who achieved mainstream success during the 1970s and 1980s.
Spanning over four decades, their repertoire has included such diverse genres as pop, disco, jazz, electronic music, bebop, blues, soul, funk, dance, country and rock.
The Pointer Sisters have won three Grammy Awards and received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1994. The group had 13 US top 20 hits between 1973 and 1985.
The group had its origins when sisters June and Bonnie Pointer began performing in clubs in 1969 as "Pointers, a Pair". The line-up grew to a trio when sister Anita Pointer joined them.
They got a record deal with Atlantic Records and released several unsuccessful singles. The trio grew to a quartet when sister Ruth joined in December 1972. They then signed with Blue Thumb Records, recorded their debut album.

With a big push from their Blue Thumb label, who introduced the band by way of a full-page ad in Billboard magazine, the Pointer Sisters took their eponymous debut straight to the top of the R&B charts in summer 1973 on the strengths of their penchant for mixing classic '60s R&B with fresh forward-thinking grooves. Add the sisters' harmonies and complex vocal moves, and there's no doubt the group was destined for a fast rise. Produced by David Rubinson, The Pointer Sisters contained effusive covers that cradled two of the Pointers' own compositions. That remarkable combo, then, allowed the Allen Toussaint classic "Yes We Can Can" to rub shoulders with the original "Jada," a boogie blues-shaded slab of jazz, and a perfect fingerprint of the eclectic style that would define the Pointers' core.

That same bent also allowed them to give equal energy to the Willie Dixon gem "Wang Dang Doodle," a song which quickly became a live set favorite, and also to their own "Sugar."
Other high points include "River Boulevard," a mid-tempo vocal that gives way to a light rock riot.
It was easy to see exactly where the Pointer Sisters were headed.
The album peaked at number 13 on the Billboard 200 and reached number three on the R&B albums chart and was certified gold by the Recording Industry Association of America in February 1974.

Gladys Knight & The Pips - Imagination (1973) Lp

Gladys Knight & the Pips were an R&B/soul family musical act from Atlanta, Georgia that remained active on the music charts and performing circuit for three decades.
They´d leave the label Motown for Buddah Records in 1973, where they recorded the hits "Best Thing That Ever Happened to Me", "I've Got to Use My Imagination" and their number-one hit single, "Midnight Train to Georgia".
The first album cut by Gladys Knight & the Pips for Buddah Records was a watershed in their history. Co-produced by the group and Tony Camillo, Imagination embodied all of what Gladys Knight & the Pips had learned in their previous six years at Motown, watching the way their records were made, combined with the maturity of the sound that they'd achieved in that time, and virtually complete freedom to choose their repertory -- a factor that they were mature and sophisticated to exploit to the fullest.

The result was four hit songs, including the chart-topping "Midnight Train to Georgia" (originally written as "Midnight Plane to Houston") and one of the biggest selling albums in their history -- Imagination was sophisticated soul at its best, Knight belting out numbers with great forcefulness and passion while the group provided delicate backup.
Among the surprising non-hits is the radiantly sung "Perfect Love" and a beautiful harmonized cover of "I Can See Clearly Now," featuring the Pips singing lead.

Voyage - Voyage (1977) - Lp

Voyage was a French disco and pop/funk group, consisting of André "Slim" Pezin (guitar/vocals), Marc Chantereau (keyboards/vocals), Pierre-Alain Dahan (drums/vocals) and Sauveur Mallia (bass), together with British lead vocalist Sylvia Mason-James, who sang on the group's first two albums.
Before Voyage, the four members, Pezin, Chantereau, Dahan and Mallia worked together in a band called V.I.P. Connection in 1975 with two disco songs: "Please Love Me Again" and "West Coast Drive", songs known by the collectors or/and the amateurs of the beginning of disco music.
Voyage is the 1977 self-titled debut album by French disco group, Voyage. The songs on the album paid a nodding homage to musical styles of different regions of the world, as if the band and its listeners were taking a jet set trip around the world, finally landing triumphantly in America, as if it were the center of the disco universe, with the song Lady America.
As was the case with a number of disco albums during the 1970s, all cuts of Voyage's debut release made it to number one on the disco chart.

In Voyage's case, they went to number one on the disco chart with their debut release for three weeks.
Although no cuts made the US pop singles chart, the single "From East to West" peaked at number eighty-five on the soul singles chart. Overseas, "From East to West" went to number 13 on the UK Singles Chart.

Johnny & Orquesta Rodrigues - Hey Mal Yo (1975) - Lp

Johnny Rodrigues (Kaapverdië, 12 november 1951) is een Kaapverdische zanger. Hij is vooral bekend van de nummer 1-hit Hey mal yo.
Hij nam zijn nummers op onder de naam Johnny & Orquesta Rodrigues.
Rodrigues werd op 12 november 1951 op de Kaapverdische Eilanden geboren. Begin jaren 70 werd hij opgeroepen voor het Portugese leger, aangezien Kaapverdië destijds een kolonie van Portugal was. Rodrigues wilde niet gestationeerd worden in Angola, destijds ook een Portugese kolonie waar een onafhankelijkheidsstrijd woedde, en vluchtte hierop met zijn familie naar de Verenigde Staten. Van daaruit ging hij in 1974 op vakantie naar Nederland. Hier kwam hij terecht in discotheek Ma Belle Amie in Scheveningen, waar hij ook een tijdje diskjockey was. Peter Tetteroo, de eigenaar van de discotheek, ontdekte Rodrigues als zanger en besloot met hem een single op te nemen. Dit was het nummer Hey mal yo, een bewerking van het Portugese volksdansje Ò Malhão. In het voorjaar van 1975 werd dit liedje een nummer 1-hit in Nederland en in Vlaanderen.

Als artiestennaam was gekozen voor Johnny & Orquesta Rodrigues. Deze naam is om twee redenen opvallend. Ten eerste was er geen sprake van een 'orkest', maar stond Rodrigues alleen op het podium. Ten tweede is orquesta het Spaanse woord voor orkest, terwijl Rodrigues' nummers Portugees zijn. Het Portugese woord voor orkest is orquestra.
Rodrigues bleek een eendagsvlieg, want na zijn nummer 1-hit wist hij geen grote successen meer te halen.
De single Hasibaba kwam in de zomer van 1975 maar tot nummer 19 in de Top 40 en nummer 24 in de Nationale Hitparade. Het album Hey mal yo, waar zijn twee hitsingles opstonden, kwam niet in de albumlijsten terecht.

Twee jaar later stond hij voor het laatst in de Top 40 met Uma casa Portuguesa, een cover van Amália Rodrigues. Daarna verdween Rodrigues weer in de anonimiteit.

Vitesse - Out In The Country (1978) - Lp

Vitesse is een voormalige Nederlandse rockgroep.
De rockgroep wordt in Amsterdam opgericht door slagwerker Herman van Boeyen (ex-Red White & Blue en Carlsberg). Naast Van Boeyen maken ook Herman Brood (zang, piano), die uit Cuby & The Blizzards is gestapt, bassist Rob ten Bokum (ex-Blue Eyed Bluesband) en gitarist Peter Smid deel uit van Vitesse. Gedurende dit jaar zullen gitaristen komen en gaan. Na het vertrek van Smid nemen achtereenvolgens Ferdy Karmelk (ex-Stud), Paul Bagmeyer (ex-Carlsberg) en Rob van Donselaar (ex-Blue Eyed Bluesband) de openstaande plaats in. Drummer en zanger Herman van Boeyen was de drijvende kracht achter de band.
De band heeft begin jaren 80 een aantal hitsingles gehad zoals "Rosalyn", "Good lookin'", "Whole lot of travellin'" en "Vanity island".

Vitesse werd in 1975 opgericht in Amsterdam door Herman van Boeyen. Herman Brood (zang en piano, voormalig Cuby and the Blizzards), Rob ten Bokum (gitaar) en Peter Smid (bas) waren de andere leden. In het eerste jaar hebben veel gitaristen de band verlaten en ook komen versterken.

In datzelfde jaar kreeg Vitesse een platencontract bij Reprise en bracht een titelloos debuutalbum uit. De band bestond op dat moment uit Herman van Boeyen, Herman Brood, Jan-Piet den Tex, Gerrit Veen en Ross Recardi. Herman Brood verliet de band om solo verder te gaan en nam Gerrit Veen mee.

Na het album Rendez Vous (Negram 1977) te hebben uitgebracht, brak de band nog niet echt door in Nederland.
Ook de LP Out in the Country (Negram 1978), met naast drummer Herman van Boeyen de gitaristen Jan van der Meij en Rudy de Queljoe (ex-Brainbox) en bassist Wilco Toerroe Leerdam, bracht niet het grote succes.
Het album kreeg een positieve ontvangst maar bleef steken in de polls.
Met opnieuw Jan van der Mey als belangrijkste vocalist wordt de elpee "Out In The Country" opgenomen.
Nippy Noya speelt bas. De groep oogst veel succes in West-Duitsland. Nederland blijft vooralsnog een beetje achter. De twee van het album getrokken singles "We'll Do The Music Tonight" en "Out In The Country" halen de hitparade dan ook niet.
Van Boeyen besluit om na negentien jaar een punt te zetten achter het hoofdstuk Vitesse.
Vitesse heeft bestaan van 1975 tot en met 1994.

I´ve Got The Bullets - I´ve Got The Bullets (1986) - Lp

In het voorjaar van 1985 wordt in Rotterdam I’ve Got The Bullets opgericht. De stad is met zijn rijke soulhistorie de ideale voedingsbodem.
De naam komt uit de film Rebel Without A Cause waar James Dean deze woorden uitroept in de slotscène. Aanvankelijk bestaat de formatie uit Fréderique (wier naam de eerste jaren consequent fout gespeld wordt als Frédérique), Ocki en Jan met Peter van Gameren, Pieter de Bruin, Luc Kranenburg, Kees Trappenburgt, Nel van 't Pad en Ria Bremer.
Sommige mensen blijven maar heel even en daardoor is het in het begin een komen en gaan van bandleden. Zo maakt toetsenman Pieter de Bruin al snel plaats voor Tijn Smit, worden de drumstokken van Luc Kranenburg (naar Down and Out) overgenomen door Max Mollinger (ex-Gruppo Sportivo) en bij het achtergrondkoortje is het al helemaal een niet te volgen stoelendans. Zo wordt Ria Bremer al snel afgelost door Nicky Romein, die even later een solo-carrière ambieert en haar plek afstaat aan Rini Klein.

Negen leden telt de formatie dus, als het in het najaar eindelijk uitgerommeld is in de bezetting. Qua muziek combineert het gezelschap soul met rock & roll ('rock & soul').
Spigt maakt indruk met haar rauwe doorleefde vocalen en de mate waarin ze in de muziek opgaat.
Meteen als de band goed op de rails staat schrijft men zich in voor de Grote Prijs Van Nederland.
Het optreden in het Rotterdamse Arena (het latere Nighttown) maakt een verpletterende indruk en het negental stoot door naar de finale.
Bij die eindronde in Paradiso wordt de band derde. De Rotterdammers zijn dan al in onderhandeling met CBS, maar het aansprekende resultaat bijde bandjeswedstrijd zorgt ervoor dat het contract uiteindelijk gunstiger uitpakt dan verwacht.

Het jaar 1986 begint al goed met een plaats op het Noorderslagfestival, hetgeen samen met de derde prijs bij de Grote Prijs de groep een rits optredens oplevert, waar menig beginnend bandje jaloers op is.
De single "In The Middle Of The Night" haalt de 36e plaats van de Top 40.
Aan het begin van de zomer gaat het gezelschap de studio in om met producers Tjeerd van Zanen en Michel van Schie het debuut voor CBS op te nemen. Het album verschijnt in het najaar, krijgt lovende kritieken en verkoopt heel aardig.
De Gladys Knight cover "It Should Have Been Me" is de volgende single. Het plaatje blijft steken op nummer vijf in de tipparade.
Ook de nieuwe single Nighttrain haalt Top 40 niet. Buiten een enkel optreden in België en Duitsland komt de groep de grens niet over, maar gezien de grote hoeveelheid optredens in eigen land is er werk volop. Opnieuw begint een periode van diverse bezettingswisselingen.

Na een intensieve tour langs het Nederlands clubcircuit in 1990 begint de motor sleetse plekken te vertonen. Vooral Fré heeft het eigenlijk wel gezien.
Het einde wordt nog even uitgesteld: voor de vertrekkende gitarist Paul Kraemer wordt gewoon een vervanger gezocht en gevonden in de persoon van Wilco van Beek.
Maar in juli besluit de formatie de handdoek in de ring te gooien.

The Buddy Odor Stop - Buddy Odor Is A Gas (1979) - Lp

Gruppo Sportivo was een Haagse popband, opgericht in 1976 en actief tot eind december 2013. De band had veel succes met de albums 10 Mistakes en Back To '78. Songs als Beep Beep Love, Hey Girl, Disco Really Made It en Tokyo werden klassiekers en zijn nog steeds veel te horen op de radio.
Eind jaren zeventig behaalde de band op de eerste golven van de new wave een nationale populariteit.
Creatieve kracht is Hans Vandenburg (gitaar en zang). Naast hem bestond de oerbezetting uit Max Mollinger (drums), Peter Calicher (toetsen), Eric Wehrmeyer (bas) en de Gruppettes Josée van Iersel en Meike Touw (zang).
De vaste formule van de band bestond uit popsongs, met veel aandacht voor relativering van personen en situaties, humor (knipogen naar), muziek-citaten en slapstick in de performance; vaak gingen de songs over een 'antiheld'.

Op het hoogtepunt van de roem nam de band (voor korte tijd) afscheid met de single Sleeping Bag. Na het solo-project Buddy Odor Is A Gas (1979) van Hans Vandenburg onder de naam The Buddy Odor Stop - met jazzy songs zoals Cats Hiss en Gruppo-achtige songs zoals de titelstrack en het duet If I Were You met Barry Hay van de Golden Earring.

Terwijl de platen van Gruppo Sportivo met een grote publiciteitscampagne in de Verenigde Staten worden uitgebracht komt tot ieders verrassing het bericht dat Hans Vandenburg heeft besloten de groep op te heffen omdat hij zich beperkt voelt in zijn muzikale ontwikkeling.
Zijn plan is een nieuwe band op te richten met muzikanten die hij in New York zal uitzoeken. Eind van het jaar verschijnt het debuutalbum van Buddy Odor Stop, waarin geen Amerikanen voorkomen maar wel o.a. de Gruppo-muzikanten Peter Calicher, Max Mollinger, Meike Touw en Lisa Bialac (zij zong mee op het album Unforgiven van Tim Hardin).
De begeleidende concertreeks trekt veel publiek, maar de reacties zijn gereserveerd. Het jazzy geluid is voor velen een te grote stijlbreuk en de zaal roept voortdurend om de oude successen. Het album Buddy Odor Is A Gas! en de gelijknamige single floppen genadeloos.

Barbra Streisand - People (1964) - Lp

People is the title of Barbra Streisand's fourth solo studio album which was released in September 1964. The title track was a newly recorded version of the hit song from the Broadway musical Funny Girl in which Streisand starred.
The album became the first of Streisand's albums to hit #1 on the Billboard album chart, spending five weeks in the top spot; it was also certified Platinum. It was re-released in the UK on the CBS Hallmark Series label in 1966 with different artwork.

After two less successful albums, Barbra Streisand returned to form on her fourth album, People, with a selection of songs that showed some of the imagination of her debut album. Much of the material was new. The album opened and closed with songs by Jule Styne and Bob Merrill, first "Absent Minded Me," and then the Top Ten title song that was the hit from Streisand's triumphant Broadway show, Funny Girl. Streisand introduced Cy Coleman and Carolyn Leigh's "When in Rome (I Do as the Romans Do)," a lively song that allowed her to display some of the spirit and humor that had been missing on her last two outings.

And when picking from older songs, she again found obscure or atypical tunes from prominent composers or lost gems she could make her own. In the former category were Irving Berlin's "Supper Time," a blues song unlike any the composer had ever done, and "My Lord and Master," from Rodgers & Hammerstein's The King and I. In the latter was the delightful "Fine and Dandy," from the 1930 show of the same name, with music by Kay Swift.
Add in some obvious choices like Jimmy Van Heusen and Sammy Cahn's "Love Is a Bore" (a companion to the previously recorded "Down with Love") and "Don't Like Goodbyes," another selection from Harold Arlen and Truman Capote's House of Flowers, from which Streisand had earlier picked "A Sleepin' Bee," and you have an album fashioned to play to the singer's strengths and musical tastes instead of trying to fit her into existing ones. That wasn't quite enough to match the quality of her debut album, but it was a definite improvement over the second and third albums. (People won Grammy Awards for Best Vocal Performance and Best Album Cover.)

The cover photo was taken by Don Bronstein at Chicago's Oak Street Beach in June 1963, when Streisand was in town for an engagement at Mister Kelly's nightclub.
