Bram Tchaikovsky - Funland (LP) (1981) - €10,00

Bram Tchaikovsky's Funland is an album of earnest, capable, appealing rock n' roll. While delivering no New Statement, the skill and sincerity with which old lodes are mined revivifies standard rock song forms and makes for a refreshing listen.
No pretension here but that's probably because there's little here to justify a big head. More like a clear head, as Bram and cohorts deliver eleven muscular tunes that invite bopping if not thought.

Brilliant power pop, unlike the first two albums which were more pub rock, similar to Bram's first band The Motors. This must have been Bram's musical statement as most of the songs only credit him as the author.
He does however get a lot of help from former Motor mates Nick Garvey and Andy McMaster with Nick being the co-producer along with Bram. Starting right off with "Stand and Deliver" they set the tone for what follows. With layers of power chords I would probably call this power pop with texture. Most of the first side follows this formula. The second side is more diversified with each of the six songs crossing a different genre. The closing "Egyptian Mummies" even has a psychedelic tinge.

The big and airy production, not so much "Wall of Sound" as hedge or thicket of sound, understands the importance of the drum kit, giving snare and kick wide room and reverb enough for thunder.
The guitar playing, however (by Bram and Denis Forbes), highlights the action: a savvy mix of Roger McGuinn's chiminess and Pete Townshend's suspended chord drama, countered by some nice trebled sounds strong on twang - less New Wave than a nod to the old masters -  More Ricky Nelson than Ricky Wilson. Though the lyrics are mainly cleverly inoffensive, there's one real bit of wit in "Why Does My Mother 'Phone Me? (just to say that she don't like me)"

Ultimately, not enough Necessary Negative (hurt, bitterness, arrogance, spite) twists this well done offering into great rock n' roll. Bram's parent group, the Motors, remains the more imaginative and Tchaikovsky takes his place among the English Positivists (Edmunds, Lowe et. al.) - Elvis Costello without the headache or the touch of genius.

Kiki Dee - Kiki Dee (LP) (1977) - €4,99

This 1977 Kiki Dee release is simply one of the best records she ever made, to my musical taste obviously.
First of all Kiki's voice is beautiful and surely would deserve wider recognition.
Kiki is best at rock with hints of blues, and with ballads where her voice draws you in and carries you along.
But that's not all: she penned herself five songs on this album and co-wrote another two, which is perhaps a lesser known side of Kiki Dee.

The contribution of Keyboardist/composer Bias Boshell with two great songs is remarkable.
Then we have the great musicians (most of them worked with Elton John, producer of the album) with special attention to the great guitar man Davey Johnstone who's all over... and the also the great James Newton-Howard.
Then we have the exquisite orchestral arrangements, the horn arrangements with the Brecker Brothers (incl. great sax wizard Michael Brecker who sadly passed away recently) and another one of my favourites David Sanborn on alto sax (what a solo on "Keep right on"!).
In any case, some of the best tracks on the album are Into Eternity, Standing Room Only, Chicago, Night Hours, Walking, and First Thing In the Morning.

This is a kind of soul-jazzy-funk-soft rock that I love so much, close to Steely Dan's music, I should say. There are no weak tracks, I love all of them, but I can't help make a special remark on "Keep right on" and "In return".

Space - Deliverance (LP) (1977) - €4,99

Space (occasionally Didier Marouani & Space), are a French electronic music band active from 1977 through 1980 and returning with on-stage remake performances since 1982. Their work is associated with the short-lived space disco genre and is a precursor of electronica

Space was founded in 1977 by Didier Marouani (also known as Ecama). The band consisted of Didier Marouani, arrangers Roland Romanelli and Jannick Top, and singer Madeline Bell. Marouani by that time had some fame as a solo pop singer, but soon focused on his band, whose name was suggested by the song “Magic Fly”, originally written in 1976 for a television program dedicated to astrology

One of the most ambitious Euro-disco acts of the late 1970s was Space, which shouldn't be confused with the alternative rock band that recorded Spiders in 1996.
By the time that Space was formed in the 1990s, the Euro-disco act heard on Deliverance had long since called it quits.
Recorded in London and Paris in 1978, this conceptual, mostly instrumental LP employs a lot of futuristic sci-fi imagery and is quite high-tech for its time.
Synthesizer-dominated instrumentals like "Air Force" and "Running in the City" give the impression that Jean-Philippe Iliesco, the album's producer, had been paying close attention to German innovators like Kraftwerk and Giorgio Moroder-and yet, Deliverance has a high-tech energy of its own. In the U.S., this record was ignored by radio programmers, but European dance clubs found that the album's faster material was great for moving bodies.
At times, Deliverance ends up sounding like European movie music and fades into the background. But when Space hits its mark, Deliverance is both interesting and infectious.

Lime - Lime II (LP) (1982) - €10,00

Lime is a Canadian Disco band from Montreal, Quebec. The group was composed of married couple Denis and Denyse LePage.

1982 saw the release of Lime's second album Lime II supported by the single "Babe We're Gonna Love Tonight". In 1983 Lime released Lime 3, featuring the hits "Guilty" and "Angel Eyes".

Early 80's techno-Disco by Lime is a critical example of sharp, fast and base-minimized- very clean form of music!
Lime's style of Disco music matches well with a very smoooth caffeine trip. 'Wake Dream' sounds like a high detail Nintendo game soundtrack as life's problems may mount worse and that song is there for when your solving each level of life!

Denis and Denyse Lepage, the Canadian brother-sister duo behind Lime, were in the limelight (pardon the pun) in the early 1980s with several irresitable songs and albums, none more so that on their second album, their best by far.

"Lime II" originally issued in 1982, is truly a nugget from the latter-day disco-era. This album starts off with the 6 original tracks on the vinyl release. Listening to it, these 6 songs sound like a greatest hits album, not a single weak track among them. The album opener (and massive hit in Europe) "Babe We're Gonna Love Tonight" sets the tone, with smart and irresitable disco-tunes, but the album only gets better after that. "Come and Get Your Love" was another massive hit. "Wake Dream" is my favorite track on here, although the next track, the even more up-tempo track "Help Yourself" comes close too. The original album closes with the only ballad on here, "A Man and A Woman", another massive hit in Europe.

1. Come And Get Your Love - 8:07
2. Help Yourself - 6:07

David Soul - Playing To An Audience Of One (LP) (1977) - €10,00

David Soul (born David Richard Solberg, August 28, 1943) is an American-British former actor and singer. He is known for his role as Detective Kenneth "Hutch" Hutchinson in the television series Starsky & Hutch from 1975 to 1979.

During the mid-1970s, Soul returned to his singing roots. Produced by Tony Macaulay, he recorded hits including "Don't Give Up on Us" (1977) which reached No. 1 in the US and the UK, and "Silver Lady" (1977), which topped the charts in the UK.

This was the second album from David Soul to be released by Private Stock label. It was a more commercial album than the first album. Unlike the first album that had been more folk in style, this album is more Pop/country and commercial in its arrangements.
The album includes the singles "going in with my eyes open" and  "Silver Lady" which also went to number one in the singles chart and was released at the same time as this album to promote it.

Luisa Fernandez - Disco Darling (LP) (1978) - €10,00

Luisa Fernandez (born 14 August, 1961) is a Spanish-born, Germany based pop singer. She is perhaps best known for her hit single, "Lay Love on You" from 1978.

Luisa Fernandez grew up in Galicia, Spain, and discovered her passion for singing early. She is one of nine brothers and sisters and at every family event she was lifted up onto the table and she sang and danced-ending up entertaining the whole party.
Her talent was officially discovered in a contest at the age of 15. A deal with Warner Brothers and her first single hits in the disco era in Europe followed.
After meeting her future husband, they formed the duo "Luisa Fernandez and Peter Kent" and had several European pop hits in Spanish, amongst them Solo por ti, that can be heard on European radio stations even today.
Shortly after they moved to the island of Ibiza, Spain, where Luisa met Jens Gad. Their creative collaboration started several years later when Jens' own studio on Ibiza was finished.
Jens describes, "We started using Luisa's Spanish poems and stories and made theme-songs out of them. We wanted to avoid pop vocal-elements and instead felt we were on a journey to discover archaic/ethnic depths in Luisa's voice that she hadn't used before."
From this collaboration was born Achillea's latest new age music meets electronica creation, Amadas Estrellas with Luisa's vocals and Jens' music

She makes a debut album that clearly links up with the prevailing discorage.
"Disco darling", yields two hits in the Netherlands, "Lay Love On You" reaches a third place in the charts, but its successor "Give Love A Second Chance" is no further than the seventeenth place.
Third single "Stop" never made to the charts.
Fernandez then makes a second disco record, but when the discorage blows over, her short career seems doomed.
She disappears from view for a number of years, but new work appears in 1987.

Marianne Rosenberg - Ich Bin Wie Du (LP) (1976) - €10,00

Marianne Rosenberg (born 10 March 1955) is a German Schlager music singer and songwriter. Rosenberg is of Roma and Sinti background. Her father, Otto, an Auschwitz death camp survivor,  was an activist on Roma and Sinti issues. Her sister, Petra, also advocates for Roma issues.

Rosenberg's musical career was consolidated throughout the 1970s with hits such as "Fremder Mann" ("Stranger"), "Er gehört zu mir" ("He belongs to me"), "Ich bin wie du" ("I am like you") which was later sampled by Blue Adonis on their track "Disco Cop", "Marleen", and "Lieder der Nacht" ("Songs of the Night"), often making appearances on TV and radio.
She is considered one of the most successful performers of German Schlager in the decades to come. She was one of the first German singers to introduce disco in the German music market with "Ich bin wie du".

On February 7, 1976, "Ich bin wie du" entered the dutch National HitParade. Her musical career started at the age of fifteen, when she won a talent show.
That same year she was allowed to record a single that became a modest hit in Germany. Rosenberg scored an international hit with the single "Ich bin wie du" (1975). In the Netherlands the single reached the 2nd place in the National Hit Parade.

Blanket Of Secrecy - Ears Have Walls (1982) - €10,00

Blanket of Secrecy (BoS) was a short-lived English new wave band formed in 1982.
The band was notable for the fact that its band members, true to their band name, were never officially identified at the time - only the pseudonyms Tinker, Tailor and Soldier were disclosed to refer to the main members - as well as mention of Spy
This led to some speculation in the music press regarding the true identity of the members, with rumours that they might be the Attractions (Elvis Costello's backing band) and speculation that the lead singer was Jack Hues of Wang Chung. However, they were eventually revealed to be Peter Marsh (Tinker, the lead singer), Andy Howell (Tailor), Roger Bechirian (Soldier) and Phil McWalter (Spy) .
Their music was synth-pop, similar to their contemporaries A Flock of Seagulls, although comparisons to The Attractions were also made.

The band's first LP was titled Walls Have Ears in the UK, and Ears Have Walls in the US. The album cover, ultimately to become an iconic classic, was designed by Barney Bubbles. The group can be seen in shadow on the album's back cover, in a photo by Brian Griffin, and in mostly obscured images on the cover of the single "Say You Will". They are seen full-face, and much more clearly, in the video for "Say You Will". Released in 1982, the album and single received significant airplay on both sides of the Atlantic, featuring in the Tipperade in the Netherlands for four weeks.

One of the finest pop albums of its time, Ears Have Walls remains one of many overlooked gems from the new wave era. This mysterious trio wrote pure and unabashed pop songs heavily influenced by the '60s and '70s and dressed them up in '80s clothing.
Guitars float and shimmer above a synth foundation, allowing vocal harmonies (and some bits of brass) to roam freely in and out of each song. The haunting "Say You Will" is drop-dead gorgeous with its acoustic guitar riff and pained vocals. "Yo-Yo" could have been a massive hit with its classic hook bouncing around the room.
"Remember Me and You," "Tell Me Baby" and "Love Me Too" contain all the elements that make pop music so enchanting and enticing. When Blanket of Secrecy get all gooey on ballads such as "Lovers," "Close to Me" and "Photograph," the effects are mesmerizing. An album to love and embrace your whole life through.

Turf - Crime Of Passion (1980) - €10,00

Geluidstechnicus is Dirk Koomen.

La Toya Jackson is the 1980 self–titled debut album from American singer-songwriter La Toya Jackson
It was released in America and mainland Europe. The album is most known for "Night Time Lover", a track produced by La Toya's brother Michael Jackson, who provides background vocals on the refrain.
The album peaked at #116 on the Billboard 200
It spawned two singles: "If You Feel the Funk" and "Night Time Lover".

Boosted heavily by the presence of renowned players like Ray Parker, Jr., Patrice Rushen, Stevie Wonder and Emilio Castillo, LaToya Jackson became the fifth family member to record solo with this generally satisfying 1980 LP.
She does best with uptempo numbers, with the straightforward romp "If You Feel the Funk" and the peppy "Save Your Love" serving as highlights.
"If You Feel the Funk" is a well-chosen opener, with its enticing vocal arrangement, sturdy rhythm patterns and a memorable guitar solo from Parker seeping into the brain instantly; "Save Your Love" picks up the pace a little but is more concentrated melodically.
Another primer is "Nighttime Lover," a softly seductive, simultaneously kinetic number produced by brother Michael. Otherwise, there aren't any other equally strong moments, though the snappy "Are You Ready," co-written and also recorded by Billy Ocean, is fairly impressionable.
Vocally, Jackson doesn't have a lot of weight, but she has an obvious enthusiasm for the songs that comes through consistently.
That factor, along with the strong cast of musicians and some memorable tunes, makes this an overall enjoyable set. The filler material is worth skipping past to soak in the finer moments.

Side one

Third World - The Story’s Been Told (1979) - €2,99

Third World is a Jamaican reggae fusion band formed in 1973. Their sound is influenced by soul, funk and disco. Although it has undergone several line-up changes, Stephen "Cat" Coore and Richard Daley have been constant members.

The Story's Been Told is an album by Jamaican reggae group Third World, released by Island Records in 1979.

The album is representative of the band's transition from roots reggae to the more pop-oriented work of its later years. The song "Talk to Me" charted in the UK at #54.
1979's THE STORY'S BEEN TOLD, like its immediate predecessor JOURNEY TO ADDIS, is a transitional album bridging the traditional roots reggae of early albums like 1976's self-titled release and the more pop-oriented and keyboard-heavy work of Third World's later years. The balance is still tilted towards the rootsy and the Rasta, however, making THE STORY'S BEEN TOLD a fine example of the band's classic era.

These seven lengthy songs are funky reggae workouts evenly divided between Rastafarian devotionals like "Irie Ites," and more playful party tunes like "Having a Party" and "Come Together." The gently flowing title track, one of Third World's finest, closes the album on an appropriately high note.
