Anita Kerr Singers - From Nashville…The Hit Sound (1962) - Lp

Anita Jean Grilli (born October 13, 1927), known professionally as Anita Kerr, is an American singer, arranger, composer, conductor, pianist, and music producer. She recorded and performed successfully with her vocal harmony groups in Nashville, Los Angeles, and Europe.
Anita was born in Memphis, Tennessee. In 1947, she married Al Kerr, and they moved to Nashville the following year so that he could take a job as a dee-jay on WKDA.
The performances of a vocal quintet she organized attracted the attention of a WSM radio program director, who then hired her to lead and arrange an octet choir on the radio station's "Sunday Down South" broadcasts. Joining her were singers Carl Garvin, Jim Hall, Doug Kirkham, Mary Ellen Puckett, Evelyn Wilson, Mildred Kirkham, and Don Fotrell. The group's first recording session was with Red Foley, and their collaboration resulted in a No. 16 hit on Billboard's Pop chart in 1950: Our Lady of Fatima. The following year, producer Owen Bradley signed them to record for Decca Records.
Their talents in demand, Anita's group continued to sing backup for other country artists in Nashville, including Eddy Arnold, Burl Ives, and Ernest Tubb. The group's recording sessions—initially averaging two per week—increased to eight sessions weekly by 1955.

In 1956, Anita Kerr's singers won a contest on the Arthur Godfrey's Talent Scouts national television program. Now, cut down to a quartet at Godfrey's suggestion, the group travelled to New York City two weeks out of every six to appear with Godfrey on his daily television and radio broadcasts. A few years later, Kerr and her singers performed five times a week with Jim Reeves on his national radio program at WSM.
The quartet's roster at this time featured tenor Gil Wright, baritone Louis Nunley, alto Dottie Dillard, and Kerr herself as both soprano and arranger. Singers and arranger soon began contributing to between twelve and eighteen recording sessions weekly. Having previously backed Faron Young, Chet Atkins, and Webb Pierce on SESAC radio transcription sessions, the Anita Kerr Singers were invited to record their own songs for SESAC.
Between 1959 and 1963, the group waxed sixty SESAC tracks. In 1960, as "The Little Dippers," the group recorded a hit single, "Forever", for the University label. Crediting herself as "Anita & Th' So-And-So's," Kerr multi-tracked her own voice to record the song Joey Baby, in 1961.
The Anita Kerr Singers signed with RCA Victor in 1961.
Their first album for the label was From Nashville...The Hit Sound. Subsequent RCA Victor LPs extended the quartet's repertoire as they explored the soul songs of Ray Charles and the compositions of Henry Mancini.

Leif Garrett - Leif Garrett (1977) - Lp

Leif Garrett (born Leif Per Nervik; November 8, 1961) is an American singer, actor and television personality. He became famous in the 1970s as a child actor, pop star and teen idol. His career was derailed by a car crash in November 1979, and he received much publicity later in his adult life for his drug abuse and legal troubles.
Garrett was born in Hollywood, California to Carolyn Stellar (b. 1934) and Rik Nervik, and started his entertainment career at age five. His father was absent for most of his life, but Garrett has since reconciled with him, stating "He feels so badly about missing the years when you know you’re so proud to have a son, like from age 12 to manhood, when you help influence and guide your son’s life. Well, he missed out on all that stuff. He is regretting missing that and he now treats me like that."

In autumn of 1976, Garrett signed a recording contract with Atlantic Records and recorded his first album early in 1977, Leif Garrett.
Leif Garrett is the debut studio album by American singer-actor Leif Garrett, released in 1977 by Atlantic. Garrett had recorded the album at Atlantic Studios while staying in New York City, and released the album at the age of 15.

The album was released in July 1977, and his first four singles charted modestly on the US Billboard Hot 100. All of these hits were covers of late 1950s and early 1960s hits such as "Runaround Sue", "Surfin' USA", "Put Your Head on My Shoulder"and "The Wanderer."

Teri DeSario – Moonlight Madness (1979) - Lp

Teri Lynn DeSario (born November 27, 1951) is an American singer-songwriter from Miami, Florida.
DeSario worked within several music genres out of high school. She was vocalist, played recorder and harp from 1970–1977 with a Medieval and Renaissance music group, the Early Music Consort, headed by scholar and Pro Musica member Arnold Grayson. She began her career as a singer/songwriter in the folk genre and later expanded her love of folk music with her passion for jazz. After marrying horn player, arranger, and composer Bill Purse, they founded a pop-folk-jazz collaborative called Abacus. One night a long-haired man walked into the club where she was performing, claiming to be the producer of the Bee Gees; it turned out he actually was. Barry Gibb heard her demo of original music and was so inspired by DeSario's vocals that he wrote a song for her called "Ain't Nothing Gonna Keep Me from You" and helped her obtain a recording contract.

"Ain't Nothing Gonna Keep Me from You" from 1978 was DeSario's first hit single, written by Barry Gibb from her first album Pleasure Train, also released in 1978. Even though the first single from her debut, Pleasure Train, made #43 on the U.S. pop charts, she hadn't really enjoyed the recording experience and wanted a new direction. It was then that she bumped into an old school mate she had as a teen, Harry Wayne Casey (KC) of KC and the Sunshine Band.
In the U.S., DeSario is mainly known for her duet with KC, lead singer of the R&B and funk group KC and the Sunshine Band of the Barbara Mason cover, "Yes, I'm Ready" from 1980 (#2 on the Billboard Hot 100 and certified gold, Adult Contemporary #1 for 2 weeks) from her second album Moonlight Madness, released in 1979. Follow-up singles (album title track) "Moonlight Madness" and a remake of "Dancin' in the Streets" charted but didn't make the Billboard Top 40.
By the end of 1980, her hit "Yes, I'm Ready" granted herself one-hit wonder status, with the disco-era making an exit, even though her duet with KC was a pop-fused remake of a slow-dancing ballad.

Aneka - Japanese Boy (1981) - Lp

Mary Sandeman, better known by her stage name Aneka (born 20 November 1954 in Edinburgh, Scotland), is a Scottish singer.
In 1981 she reached number one in the UK Singles Chart with her song "Japanese Boy".
She was well known for the Oriental image she adopted for the song. After her brief foray into pop, she reverted to her real name and established herself as an accomplished singer of Scottish traditional music.
Mary Sandeman recorded the song "Japanese Boy" in 1981. Impressed with the results, her record company Hansa decided to release it as a single with full promotion. Having discovered the name 'Aneka' in a telephone directory, Sandeman devised a suitable image for her performances of the song. Released in summer 1981, "Japanese Boy" climbed the charts impressively and reached no. 1 for one week in August.

Buoyed by this success, the record company commissioned an album and looked to find a follow-up single. The song "Little Lady" was chosen, but caused some concern as to what image to use, as it was felt that a Japanese look would be inappropriate for the song as well as giving the artist a limited lifespan. In the event Sandeman adopted a 19th-century 'lady' image, but retained the same high-pitched voice as used for her hit. The song failed to chart highly in the UK, reaching only no. 50 - securing her the label of 'one-hit wonder'.

Sandeman's first pop album, entitled Aneka, was released at the same time (although she had in 1979 released an album under her own name) and featured a mix of upbeat tracks in the vein of "Japanese Boy" and a selection of slow-paced numbers, sung in her 'true' singing voice. The album however failed to chart.
A third and final single was released in early 1982. This was "Ooh Shooby Doo Doo Lang", which told a light-hearted tale of a singer bemoaning the fact that she has been relegated to backing vocals; the lyrics go on to mention Paul McCartney and Stevie Wonder and both "Japanese Boy" and "Little Lady". The song missed the UK chart; however in Europe it gave her a third hit and was followed there by the release of another album track, "I Was Free".

Soundtrack - Sil De Strandjutter (1976) - Lp

John Valmore Pearson (18 June 1925 – 20 March 2011), known as Johnny Pearson, was a British composer, orchestra leader and pianist. He led the Top of the Pops orchestra for sixteen years, wrote a catalogue of library music, and had many of his pieces used as the theme music to television series.

In the 1970s, Johnny Pearson composed the music score for the Dutch TV series Sil de Strandjutter, performed by his orchestra.

Children Of The World - The Time Is Now (1980) - Lp

Steve Popovich and legendary Nashville producer/arranger Bill Justis have created a labor of love for our perpetual enjoyment and inspiration.
The voices of children never fail to create goose-bumps — and these Children of the World will thrill your heart. They sing with a long list of adult superstars and the selection of songs is brilliant, from "If We Only Had The Time" (what a philosophy to come from out-of-the-mouths-of-babes) and "Kids Are People, Too," to "Grandfather Song" (perfect!), to a stirring, scalp-tingling "American Medley" with Charlie Daniels. The heart is warmed.
The soul is inspired. The eyes mist over … It is time that the music of our children be heard outside of school auditoriums and classrooms. It is time for these voices to ride the media and caress the airwaves. For these are the voices of rock and flame. These are indeed the voices of our children … Children of the World.

Ellen’s duet with Jimmy Hall "The Time is Now" is, unsurprisingly, a sticky sweet ballad. The album also contains an instrumental introduction written by Ian Hunter, a song by Abba’s Björn and Benny [Disclaimer: I fucking hate Abba], an appearance by Slovakian polka king Frank Yankovich (not related to ‘Weird’ Al) and a Father Abraham and the Smurfs song performed by Hervé Villechaize.

The ‘Children of the World’ appear courtesy of The Northern Ohio Children’s Performing Foundation, Inc., a non-profit organisation.

Kate & Anna McGarrigle - Kate & Anna McGarrigle (1975) - Lp

Kate McGarrigle (February 6, 1946 – January 18, 2010) and Anna McGarrigle (born December 4, 1944) were a duo of Canadian singer-songwriters from Quebec, who performed until Kate McGarrigle's death on January 18, 2010.
Anna and Kate McGarrigle were born in Montreal of mixed Irish- and French-Canadian background, but lived their childhood in the Laurentian Mountains village of Saint-Sauveur-des-Monts, northwest of Montreal, where they learned piano from village nuns.
In the 1960s, in Montreal, while Kate was studying engineering at McGill University and Anna art at the École des beaux-arts de Montréal, they began performing in public and writing their own songs. From 1963 to 1967 they teamed up with Jack Nissenson and Peter Weldon to form the folk group Mountain City Four.

Kate & Anna McGarrigle is the debut album by Kate & Anna McGarrigle, released in January 1976.
The album includes "Heart Like a Wheel," the McGarrigles' most famous song, which was first recorded in 1972 by McKendree Spring and by Linda Ronstadt in 1974. That song subsequently has been covered by several other artists, including Billy Bragg, Katie Moore, The Corrs, and June Tabor.
Other songs from the album which have received cover treatments include "Talk to Me of Mendocino," covered by Ronstadt on her 1982 album Get Closer, by the English singer-songwriter John Howard on his 2007 E.P. The Bewlay Brothers and by Nona Marie and The Choir on their 2011 eponymous album; "Complainte pour Ste-Catherine," covered by the British pop singer Kirsty MacColl in 1989; and "Go Leave," covered by Anne Sofie von Otter with Elvis Costello.
Guest musicians on the album include Lowell George, Bobby Keys and Anna McGarrigle's husband, Dane Lanken.
On 25 December 1976, the album was voted Rock Album of the Year by London's Melody Maker. It was also listed at #5 on the 1976 Pazz & Jop poll.

The Waikiki Beach Boys - Sounds Of The Pacific - Lp

UK-based Hawaiian music band of the 1950s-1970s.
The Beachboys of Waikiki are a renowned group of Hawaiian watermen who worked on the beaches of Waikiki from the 1920s to the 1950s when guests from all around the world began arriving to stay at the two luxurious new Waikiki hotels: the Moana Hotel and the Royal Hawaiian Hotel.
Many of the guests coming to stay at the Waikiki hotels would stay for lengthy periods of time, allowing them a chance to develop friendships with the Beachboys who would share the Hawaiian culture and aloha spirit. The first official Waikiki Beach Patrol was formed in the 1930s, and one of the most famous of the Beachboys was renowned Hawaiian swimmer and Olympic gold medallist Duke Kahanamoku who had formed Hui Nalu (Club of the Waves) in 1911. Many of the original members of this club later became Waikiki Beachboys.

Fact: Without the Waikiki Beachboys, Hawaii’s ancient ritual of surfing may have been forgotten
Among the clients of the Beachboys were many wealthy and often famous visitors who enjoyed outrigger canoe rides and also liked to try surfing the waves of Waikiki. The Beachboys also catered to the Hawaiian royalty of the time. Over time the Beachboys also developed somewhat of a reputation for their amorous adventures with the many women who sought out their services and aloha. Since many of the Beachboys were also talented musicians it is likely that more than one female client was wooed with sweet tropical melodies.

The Beachboys were experts at reading the ocean—including the waves, tides winds, and currents—as well as fishing and harvesting limu (seaweed). Skilled at much more than surfing and steering canoes, the Beachboys were leaders in the revival of surfing and other watersports in the early 20th century. Despite the rumors, the Beachboys were required to adhere to a strict code of conduct that showed great respect for all guests, and they also worked to keep the beach clean and safe. Many of the Beachboys had colorful names such as Blue Makua, Toots, Turkey, Chick, Panama Dave, and Steamboat. Other renowned beachboys were Rabbit Kekai and Sam Kahanamoku.

Eventually the nature of Hawaii’s tourist industry began to change as average U.S. citizens, and not just wealthy people, were able to travel to the Islands. The typical visit to Hawaii became shorter and shorter. Things changed drastically in 1941 after the bombing of Pearl Harbor when the United States entered World War II. With the imposition of Martial Law, Hawaii’s famous carefree lifestyle was put on hold and this also signaled the end of the golden era of the Beachboys of Waikiki. Decades later in 1973 the Waikiki Beach Boys Canoe Club was formed. The goal of the group was to revive the original image of the famous Waikiki Beachboys which included not only the water skills of canoe paddling and surfing, but also the aloha spirit that embraces a unique Hawaiian sense of generosity and friendship
