The George Benson Collection is a compilation album by George Benson, released in 1981. Originally a two-LP set.
In addition to previously released material from Benson's tenures with A&M Records, CTI Records, and his then-current label, Warner Bros. Records, the album features two new songs, including Benson's #1 R&B hit "Turn Your Love Around." The George Benson Collection was certified gold by the RIAA.
This Warner Brothers Benson collection is a mix of George’s vocal R&B pop songs and some instrumentals, a wee bit of soul jazz, compiled in the 80’s from various Benson albums.
This double album gives snippets, and hits, from three different record labels Benson recorded for, A&M, Aristra and CTI also including a couple of new songs.
George Benson has a great voice and I do enjoy some of his vocal tracks, as well as the guest duets, especially with Aretha Franklin but I also enjoy the instrumentals, Bensons guitar playing and scatting to his guitar and there is not enough of that on the 17 tracks, a few more would have balance things off a bit.
The instrumentals that are included are all good, a groovy 'Last Train To Clarksville' and of course the classic 'Breezin' included.
This is not a jazz album but a jazz guitarist singing and playing in a crossover way from the pure jazz Benson started playing in the 60’s.
Benson is good at pop and R&B (some great examples of that on this collection) but I am sure some early Benson fans wished he did not crossover as he is a great guitarist and I am also sure some fans of his crossover music would not take a second look at his early, pure jazz albums.
They are worlds apart but there are some, like me, who like to travel to different worlds.
