Dennis Weaver - McCloud Country (1975) (LP) - €10,00

posted by ad-vinylrecords

Dennis Weaver (born June 4, 1924, Joplin, Missouri, USA – died February 24, 2006, Ridgway, Colorado, USA) was an American actor, perhaps best known for his roles on the television series Gunsmoke (1955-1975) and McCloud (1970-1977).
Launched his own record label "Just Good Records" in the 1970's.
Most well known artist on the label was Recording artist / actor Randy Boone.

Weaver was also a recording artist, with most of his tracks being spoken-word recordings with musical accompaniment.
He released several singles and albums between 1959 and 1984, most notable of which was his eponymous Im'press Records LP in 1972, the cover of which featured a portrait of Weaver in character as McCloud; it was the first of seven albums he recorded.
Though he wasn't any great shakes vocally, he managed a half dozen country albums, but no chart-toppers.
Here, ably backed by some Nashville stalwarts (including Mac Davis on harmonica) with album liner notes by Mae Axton (Hoyt's mother and writer of "Heartbreak Hotel"), he turns in another journeyman effort. Highlights are "Flat Bed Truck" and the tear-jerker "Uncle Lem." It's not bad, but you won't need more than one.

Released in USA as "One More Road"

Horslips - Aliens (LP) (1977) - €10,00

posted by ad-vinylrecords

Horslips are an Irish Celtic rock band that compose, arrange and perform songs frequently inspired by traditional Irish airs, jigs and reels
The group are regarded as 'founding fathers of Celtic rock' for their fusion of traditional Irish music with rock music and went on to inspire many local and international acts.
They formed in 1970 and 'retired' in 1980 for an extended period. The name originated from a spoonerism on The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse which became "The Four Poxmen of The Horslypse".

8th album by the great Irish Prog group Horslips, great precursors of Celtic Rock in general and Celtic Prog in particular.
Firmly based in Irish Folk music and the Celtic tradition, the band incorporated these themes with Prog, creating exciting and outstanding music, which withstands the tides of time beautifully.
The band included guitarist John Fean, multi—instrumentalist Charles O`Connor, keyboardist Jim Lockhart, bassist Barry Devlin and drummer Eamon Carr.
All five musicians contributed their musical ideas as composers and four of them (except the drummer) shared the vocal duties. This release is Rockier and less Celtic in comparison to their earlier albums, but still an excellent album overall.

Aliens is their transitional album bridging the gap between the Celtic myth and legend woven into their earlier work and the pop/rock of their latter days.
It tells the story of the early Irish immigrants voyages to settle in America, their reception upon arrival and the sorrow at leaving their homeland only to find the promised land was not what they were led to believe.

Horslips were a sadly underrated band who, on the evidence of this one album, deserved far better than they actually received.
There is some phenomenal guitar playing by James Fean particularly on "The Wrath Of The Rain", "Speed The Plough" and the instrumental "Exiles".
Jim Lockhart's flute and Charles O'Connor's mandolin and fiddle provide the perfect accompaniment and ensure the band never lose sight of their Celtic origins.
Opening with the sounds of a harbor suggesting a voyage across the Atlantic, the band tell tales of hope and hardship, using a considerable range of styles and shifts of mood. Pop-rock hooks abound, but there are also hard rock riffs, jazz syncopation, and an instrumental (the beautiful "Exiles").
The songs are often moored to traditional irish melodies that sometimes bubble up in brief interludes between numbers. The band are watchwork tight throughout, with Johnny Fean's guitar and Jim Lockhart's keyboards standing out.

Change - Sharing Your Love (LP) (1982) - €7,00

posted by ad-vinylrecords

Change is an Italian-American post-disco group formed in Bologna, Italy, in 1979 by businessman and executive producer Jacques Fred Petrus (1948–1987) and Mauro Malavasi (born 1957). They were heavily influenced by the disco band Chic.

Sharing Your Love is the third studio album by the Italian/U.S. ensemble Change. It was released in 1982 and reached number sixty-six on the US Billboard Album Chart and fourteen on the US Billboard Black Albums chart.
Sharing Your Love includes the singles "The Very Best in You", "Oh What a Night", "Sharing Your Love", "Hard Times (It's Gonna Be Alright)" and "Keep On It" (in Italy only).

The third release from Change. The difference here is that the overall musical style is different from the 2 previous releases. Recorded entirely in New York at the Media Sound Studios, this 10-track album didn't have the same impact or success sales-wise as the other ones, but still the overall quality and the vocals are just marvelous.
The first single was _The Very Best In You_ which did a decent run on the dance and r&b charts in April 1982. Followed by the more hardhitting club track _Hard Times (It's Gonna Be Alright_.
Another 2 singles were released; _Oh What A Night_ (originally done by The Four Seasons) and _You're My Girl_.
A slightly different approach was taken with this album. Less disco but more r&b would best describe it really. Nonetheless, there is not one bad track on this LP.
A stellar cast of wellknown session musicians and singers make this a true gem. One of the reasons this album had trouble achieving the same success as _Miracles_ lies in the fact that the group's producer had taken on other projects at the same time and the creative juices had probably gone into them instead.
Those projects were _B.B.&.Q Band_, _Ritchie Family_ and _High Fashion_.

The band recorded the songs for album at Mediasound Studios, New York City. The sessions were then mastered at Sterling Sound Studios. Receiving mixed to positive reviews the album was originally released as an LP in April 1982. The artwork was designed by Greg Porto.

Linda Lewis - Woman Overboard (LP) (1977) - €10,00

posted by ad-vinylrecords

Linda Ann Fredericks (27 September 1950 – 3 May 2023), better known as Linda Lewis, was an English singer, songwriter and musician.
She is best known for the singles "Rock-a-Doodle-Doo" (1973) and her version of Betty Everett's "The Shoop Shoop Song" (1975).

She was the eldest of six children, three of whom also had singing careers. Lewis was a self-taught guitarist and keyboard player, influenced by Harry Nilsson, Billie Holiday and Smokey Robinson, also drawing inspiration from others such as Joni Mitchell. Her music blended folk, funk and soul.

Woman Overboard is an album by English singer Linda Lewis, released in 1977.

Although Linda Lewis' April 1977 album Woman Overboard never managed to muscle its way into the U.K. charts, it nevertheless further cemented the singer's place in British pop history with 11 tracks that effortlessly showcased her unique and dynamic vocal range.
Powering through a handful of goodies that includes a veritable cornucopia of breathtaking moments, Lewis is sensational on the gorgeous "Moon and I" and "My Love Is Here to Stay," while matching notes a little later across Cat Stevens' "Bonfire," a song that was a highlight of his simultaneously released Izitso album.
Elsewhere, she takes a nice twist on the Allen Toussaint classic "Dreamer of Dreams," while "My Friend the Sun" and "No. 1 Heartbreaker" still crackle from Lewis' own energized delivery.
Another winner, "Light Years Away" would find new life when it was re-recorded for her 1997 Whatever... album.
It's a shame that Woman Overboard has become lost in the shuffle of the myriad Lewis albums out there, all the more so since so many of these songs have been left off the various greatest-hits packages. While it is by no means the equal of its predecessors (or the later A Tear and a Smile), it remains a powerful, and powerfully affecting, offering.

The Icicle Works - If You Want To Defeat Your Enemy Sing His Song (LP) (1987) - €10,00

posted by ad-vinylrecords

The Icicle Works (also known as Icicle Works in the United States) are an English alternative rock band and were named after the 1960 short story "The Day the Icicle Works Closed" by science fiction author Frederik Pohl. They had a top 20 UK hit with "Love Is a Wonderful Colour" (1983). In the US and Canada, they had one top 40 hit, the 1984 single "Birds Fly (Whisper to a Scream)".

If You Want to Defeat Your Enemy Sing His Song is the third album by The Icicle Works. The album was released in 1987.

The Ian Broudie-produced Defeat Your Enemy brought out the band's varying influences in different ways, resulting in a varied record touching on everything from funk to folk. But as successful as earlier works? Yes and no.
Unquestionably, the band's knack for big, uplifting but not hollow performances was still in fine flower, as the smash single "Understanding Jane" showed. A quick, fierce rocker with an instantly catchy pop vibe and a brilliant chorus, it's a '50s tearjerker filtered through the Ramones with fantastic results. Another winner is the opening cut, "Evangeline," with a lovely chorus consisting of overdubbed vocals from the band and guest singer Alison Limerick and a quick, Motown-touched rhythm supporting McNabb's powerful singing.
Then there's "Up Here in the North of England," a slow, string-touched waltz winningly sung while bitterly ripping into the political state of the nation line for line. McNabb's vocals throughout the album are deeper than before, but still with the same general sense of control and projection; if anything, he was doing a better David Bowie croon than Bowie himself could do at the time.
However, elsewhere the elements are in place but the performance isn't quite there. Part of this can be laid at Broudie's feet as well as the various mixers on the record, who bring things to a too commercially ready punch and sheen. Consider the arena-level pound of Sharrock's drums on "Hope Springs Eternal," where earlier his performances wouldn't need such overamping to make their impact. It's not just a technical question, though; McNabb's guitar here aims for a classic rock style that the band doesn't really need.
Other songs like "When You Were Mine" bury a good song and performance with technically accomplished but cold results. In the end, Defeat Your Enemy half defeats itself, but not without some blazingly brilliant results on the way.

Jeffrey Osborne - Jeffrey Osborne (LP) (1982) - €10,00

posted by ad-vinylrecords

Jeffrey Osborne is the debut studio album by American singer Jeffrey Osborne
It was released by A&M Records on May 18, 1982.
His solo debut after leaving his band L.T.D. for a solo career, Osborne worked with George Duke on the majority of the album, though legal issues had initially prevented him from signing his solo deal with A&M for a whole year.

As vocalist for the group L.T.D., Osborne's booming voice led hits like "Love Ballad," "Where Did We Go Wrong," and "Shine On." The group enjoyed constant success and offered a catalog of well-executed and classic albums including 1977's Something to Love and Togetherness from 1978.
In 1982 it came as a complete shock when Osborne made his solo bid. Unlike countless other acts who did the same thing, his self-titled release proves that it was a great decision.
Producer George Duke offered Osborne an up-to-the-minute sound with a collection of great studio players ranging from drummer Steve Ferrone to bassist Louis Johnson
That being said, a few of the tracks here don't play to Osborne's strengths as a committed and slightly quirky vocalist. "New Love" and "Eeenie Meenie" are so proficient yet by the numbers anyone could have sung them.
The best tracks on this album give him the needed challenges that make him soar. The first single, the moody and rhythmic "Really Don't Need No Light," co-written by Osborne and David "Hawk" Wolinski, benefits from a string arrangement from George Del Barrio.
The ballad "You Were Made to Love" not only perfectly captures Duke's uncluttered and precise production style, it also plays to Osborne's emotionality.
The last track, "Congratulations," is a great tearjerker that has Osborne's reserve and intellect making it that much better.
This is an impressive solo debut from one of R&B and pop's best vocalists.

The Chimes - The Chimes (LP) (1990) - €10,00

posted by ad-vinylrecords

The Chimes were a British dance music trio, which consisted of Pauline Henry (born in Jamaica) with Mike Peden and James Locke from Edinburgh, Scotland.
They are best known for their hits "Heaven" and a remake of U2's "I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For", which became a UK top 10 hit.

The Chimes is the only studio album by Scottish dance music act The Chimes, released in 1990.

The Chimes' sole album is proof that commercial dance-pop can have artistic viability as well as chart potential.
A mixture of hip influences (Soul II Soul's Jazzie B and Nellee Hooper produced two tracks, including the meaty acid house single "1-2-3") and the polish of soul and pop veterans (Pete Wingfield plays piano on most of the album, and other guests range from the Hooters' Eric Bazilian to '70s studio pro Ralph Schuckett), The Chimes is a completely solid and credible album with thankfully little of the overdone slickness or shrieking of pseudo-soul pretenders.
(In fact, it's possible that the low-key dignity of this album is why it wasn't a bigger chart hit, though it received rave reviews both in the U.S. and the trio's native Great Britain.) Pauline Henry's expressive but controlled voice is powerful without resorting to the tiresome trills and oversinging of so many of her R&B contemporaries, and multi-instrumentalist producers James Locke and Michael Peden combine pop, dance, and soul influences into a seamless, sleekly danceable blend.
The album's biggest hit, a gospel-tinged remake of U2's "I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For," finds new levels of power in that overplayed song, and its inclusion makes perfect thematic and musical sense instead of being the desperate plea for chart attention it might have been in less capable hands.

Sister Sledge - When The Boys Meet The Girls (LP) (1985) - €10,00

posted by ad-vinylrecords

When the Boys Meet the Girls
is the eighth studio album by the American R&B vocal group Sister Sledge, released on June 7, 1985, by Atlantic Records. It was the group's first release on the Atlantic label.

Their last album to hit the charts, 1985's When the Boys Meet the Girls found Sister Sledge attempting to return to past form as they brought Chic's Nile Rodgers back onboard to produce and perform. And although the move would ultimately prove ineffective, as the album appeared and hovered just out of the Top 50, this easy pairing returned the sisters to an earlier edge.
With the title track backed by an eclectic arrangement, those classic punchy Sister Sledge vocals were pushed well into the front of the action.
The album birthed two further standouts, as both "Frankie," which is spun to become reggae-lite, and the heavily Rodgers-influenced club hit "Dancing on the Jagged Edge" rippled off the grooves. The latter, just barely limping to a paltry number 73 R&B, would prove the band's last hit until their comeback in the early '90s.
Elsewhere, the Kathy Sledge-led ballad "You Need Me" emerges the best of the bunch, while the snappy "Peer Pressure" wades into wave territory, leaving the frenetic and not-quite-pleasing "Hold out Poppy" well out of the loop. When the Boys Meet the Girls is a fine effort, but this late in the day it just doesn't pull enough tricks out of the hat to make it worthwhile. And even through it's a major step up from their last effort, Sister Sledge is far better sampled across their earlier R&B heyday.

Mike Oldfield - Crises (LP) (1983) - €10,00

posted by ad-vinylrecords

Crises is the eighth studio album by English musician and songwriter Mike Oldfield, released on 27 May 1983 on Virgin Records
Oldfield started recording the album towards the end of his 1982 tour supporting his previous record, Five Miles Out
It marked a continuation of Oldfield's experimentation with more accessible music which began in the late 1970s; side one contains the 20-minute "Crises" and side two contains a collection of shorter songs which feature vocalists Maggie Reilly, Jon Anderson, and Roger Chapman. Oldfield produced Crises with drummer Simon Phillips, who also plays on the album.
Crises reached No. 6 on the UK Albums Chart and became Oldfield's most successful record of the 1980s following the release of the single "Moonlight Shadow", which went to number one in nine countries and sold in excess of a million units.
Oldfield supported the album with the Crises Tour across Europe in 1983 that featured most of the musicians that played on the album.

Side one

The title track of the album is a twenty-minute-long piece, featuring a small amount of vocals, sung by Oldfield. The beginning and end of the track are driven by a synthesised lead passage, stylistically similar to the opening theme to Oldfield's Tubular Bells. Oldfield rated "Crises" as one of the best tracks he had done since "Tubular Bells".

Side two

"Moonlight Shadow" features Oldfield's touring vocalist Maggie Reilly, who had also sung on his previous albums. Oldfield had singer Hazel O'Connor sing on an early version of the track, which was then titled "Moment of Passion", but it failed to produce sufficient results. He then booked Reilly for a studio session, for which he prepared by drinking wine and writing a set of lyrics using a rhyming dictionary. Reilly sang the lyrics in a rock style at first, which prompted Oldfield to suggest a softer tone and "in the manner of a lullaby". The idea worked, despite recording the song in small sections and using multiple drop-ins which took some time to finalise and piece together.

"In High Places" was written by Oldfield with lyrics by himself and Yes vocalist Jon Anderson, who sings on the track. The pair had worked on several occasions prior to recording Crises, and Oldfield had enjoyed Anderson's vocal style and how easy it was working with him. Anderson was living in Barbados at the time of writing, so Oldfield phoned him from England and sung the song's tune to him, after which Anderson went away and wrote lyrics to it. The two later met and finished the song in Oldfield's studio. The track features Pierre Moerlen, who had toured with Oldfield and played on his albums, on vibraphone.

"Foreign Affair" features Reilly on vocals, who co-wrote the lyrics with Oldfield.

"Taurus 3", a short fast-paced guitar piece unlike the previous two long multi-themed "Taurus" tracks featured on QE2 and Five Miles Out respectively.

"Shadow on the Wall" features vocals by Roger Chapman. Oldfield wrote the song with Chapman's voice in mind.

Peter Koelewijn En Zijn Rockets - Peter Live (1981) (2LP) - €12,50

posted by ad-vinylrecords
