Jim Croce - Life And Times (1973) - €5,00

James Joseph Croce (January 10, 1943 – September 20, 1973) was an American folk and rock singer-songwriter. Between 1966 and 1973, Croce released five studio albums and numerous singles.

The day before the lead single to his fifth album, I Got a Name, was released, Croce, along with five others, were killed in a plane crash, at the height of his popularity.
Croce's music continued to chart throughout the 1970s following his death.
His wife, Ingrid Croce, was his early songwriting partner and she continued to write and record after his death, and his son A. J. Croce himself became a singer-songwriter in the 1990s.

Life and Times is the fourth studio album by American singer-songwriter Jim Croce, released in 1973. The album contains the #1 Billboard chart hit "Bad, Bad Leroy Brown", one of Croce's most successful songs.
Croce was nominated for two 1973 Grammy awards in the "Pop Male Vocalist" and "Record of the Year" categories for the song "Bad, Bad Leroy Brown".

Carlos Santana/ Mahavishnu / John McLaughlin - Love Devotion Surrender (1973) - €5,00

Love Devotion Surrender is an album released in 1973 by guitarists Carlos Santana and John McLaughlin, with the backing of their respective bands, Santana and The Mahavishnu Orchestra.
The album was inspired by the teachings of Sri Chinmoy and intended as a tribute to John Coltrane.
It contains two Coltrane compositions, two McLaughlin songs, and a traditional gospel song arranged by Santana and McLaughlin. It was certified Gold in 1973.

Both men were recent disciples of the guru Sri Chinmoy, and the title of the album echoes basic concepts of Chinmoy's philosophy, which focused on "love, devotion and surrender". Chinmoy spoke about the album and the concept of surrender:
Unfortunately, in the West surrender is misunderstood. We feel that if we surrender to someone, he will then lord it over us....But from the spiritual point of view...when the finite enters in the Infinite, it becomes the Infinite all at once. When a tiny drop enters into the ocean, we cannot trace the drop. It becomes the mighty ocean.
For both men the album came at a transitional moment spiritually and musically: Love Devotion Surrender was a "very public pursuit of their spiritual selves." Carlos Santana was moving from rock toward jazz and fusion, experiencing a "spiritual awakening", while McLaughlin was about to experience the break-up of the Mahavishnu Orchestra after being criticized by other band members.
Santana had been a fan of McLaughlin, and McLaughlin had introduced Santana to Sri Chinmoy in 1971, at which time the guru bestowed the name "Devadip" on him, and the two had started playing and recording together in 1972.
According to his biographer Marc Shapiro, Santana had much to learn from McLaughlin: "He would sit for hours, enthralled at the new ways to play that McLaughlin was teaching him," and his new spirituality had its effect on the music: "the feeling was that Carlos's newfound faith was present in every groove."

The first track, "A Love Supreme", is a version of the Coltrane composition "Acknowledgement" from the 1964 landmark album A Love Supreme. It features McLaughlin and Santana, both playing electric guitar, in an extended, improvised trading of bars. For the most part, Santana is panned to the left channel and McLaughlin to the right.
As with the original, toward the end a chant of "A love supreme" is heard. (Only Armando Peraza is credited as a singer.)
"Naima" is another Coltrane composition, played on acoustic guitar. First appearing in 1959 on Coltrane's Giant Steps, it is a gentle song played in a straightforward manner.

"The Life Divine" again returns to Coltrane's A Love Supreme, opening with the chanted phrase "the love divine" – which one writer inaccurately referred to as "bovine chanting". The song's first part is extensive, high-tempo improvisation by Santana, alternating between quick phrases and long, sustained notes (including one that runs from 3:29 to 4:03). Midway through the song and introduced by the "life divine" chant, McLaughlin takes over with mostly high-speed staccato bursts and riffs. The chant returns, incorporating "it's yours and mine", and Larry Young's organ, with percussion, provide the outro.

"Let Us Go Into the House of the Lord" is a 16-minute-long track based on the traditional gospel song. The arrangement was credited to Santana and McLaughlin but Bob Palmer in Rolling Stone wrote that the arrangement is close enough to Lonnie Liston Smith's "to be described as a cop".Smith's arrangement was recorded in 1970 when he worked with Pharoah Sanders, who had recorded and worked closely with Coltrane.
After the slow introductory statement (the part which resembles Smith's arrangement), most of the piece consists of soloing over two chords accompanied by a loping bass and Latin percussion. Of Larry Young's organ contribution here, Paul Stump, in Go Ahead John, wrote: "with its overlapping flurries of triplets, [it] is a moment of pure genius, worthy of mention in its own right, a musical equivalent of a swarm of surreally coloured butterflies." The track closes with a return to the slow introductory statement.

The final track, "Meditation", is a "pretty but light McLaughlin composition" that McLaughlin had previously recorded as a solo for exclusive use by the New York radio station WNEW-FM. McLaughlin plays piano, and Santana the acoustic guitar, on Love Devotion Surrender's version of the tune.

Styx - Equinox (1975) - €10,00

Equinox is the fifth album by Styx, released in December 1975.
The album was the band's first release for A&M Records (with whom they had signed earlier in 1975, after the late unexpected success of the 1973 single "Lady").
The album also marked the final appearance of original Styx guitarist John Curulewski who left the band to spend time with his family, abruptly following the release of Equinox.
The band went into a frantic search to find a replacement for their upcoming tour to support Equinox. Soon after, they found Tommy Shaw.

Still harboring their synthesizer-led dramatics alongside Dennis De Young's exaggerated vocal approach, the material on Equinox was a firm precursor of what was to come . After Equinox, guitarist John Curulewski parted ways with the band, replaced by Tommy Shaw, who debuted on 1976's Crystal Ball album.

The album's biggest hit is the track "Lorelei", which became Styx's second US Top 30 hit.
The opening track "Light Up" is a rock and roll anthem.
"Mother Dear," co-sung by Curulewski (verses) and DeYoung (chorus), is in a prog-rock style.
"Lonely Child" is a melodic power ballad featuring 12-string guitars.

Side B opens with the rocker "Midnight Ride," which showcases the hard rock singer-songwriter Young would become. It is the only song written by him on the album.
"Born for Adventure," about legends such as Robin Hood, is the only song co-written by DeYoung, Young, and Curulewski.
The 12-string guitar instrumental "Prelude 12" was composed by Curulewski. It segues into the most well-known song on the album, "Suite Madame Blue," which was written about the then-imminent US Bicentennial. The track became a staple at all Styx tours with Dennis DeYoung. It is a rare example of a Styx song having four vocal parts, and includes a one-time backing vocal by Chuck Panozzo, during the "America" part.

The J. Geils Band - Love Stinks (1980) - €10,00

Love Stinks is the ninth studio album by American rock band The J. Geils Band. The album was released on January 28, 1980, by EMI Records.
The title song, "Love Stinks" is a rant against unrequited love. It has been covered by industrial metal band Bile, by Andru Branch in the film Love Stinks, Joan Jett in the film Mr. Wrong and Adam Sandler in the film The Wedding Singer.

Released some two years after the band's EMI debut, Sanctuary, the Love Stinks project would see the J. Geils Band going in an even more commercial-leaning direction than its predecessor.
Taking over the main production duties, keyboard player/main songwriter Seth Justman set out to better the band's gold-plus-selling Sanctuary. And to some degree, he wildly succeeded.

Although not as consistent or diverse as Sanctuary, Love Stinks would feature one of the band's most recognizable FM songs ever -- the album's infectious title track "Love Stinks." In a live setting, the track would often turn into a veritable tour de force only to be outdone by Peter Wolf's hilarious rap about "Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden smoking weed together," which would introduce the song (often on a nightly basis).
"Night Time" is another great, although somewhat typical "rave-on" type of J. Geils song; "No Anchovies Please" is a little strange; and closer "Till the Walls Come Tumblin' Down" is, as the song title hints, just that.
Bolstered by "Just Can't Wait," another good album opener, Love Stinks turns out to be solid effort, but one that sounds a little outdated at times due to its acerbic, synth textures.

Not one of the band's best overall records but one that would allow the band to outdo itself with the classic Freeze Frame a year later.

Immaculate Fools - Hearts Of Fortune (1985) - €5,00

Immaculate Fools were a pop group formed in 1984, who had their biggest success in 1985 with the single "Immaculate Fools", and continued until 1997, releasing six studio albums before splitting up.
In 2015, Kevin Weatherill reformed the group with new members.

The band was formed in Kent, England by two sets of brothers: Kevin Weatherill (vocals, guitar) and Paul Weatherill (bass, vocals), and brothers Andy Ross (guitar) and Peter Ross (drums), the sons of saxophonist Ronnie Ross.

Their debut album, Hearts of Fortune, reached No. 65 in the UK Albums Chart in 1985. The band toured Europe extensively, building a strong following in Spain, where they made several television appearances

"We talk of changes, we talk of may things. When there is sadness we rearrange the dream. Those tainted promises, they fade and die. We forget so easily the love inside. We are enchanted, we are immaculate, we are selected".
Although nominally Immaculate Fools may be counted as a new wave band they go far beyond this genre both in music and in their imagery.
"Oh they came with curious mind, with vision and grace of child through the velvet veil of hope gentle souls, choked with rope and they found their pleasure in truth which they carved in the hearts of men but the hearts of men were false - a waste of time, a waste of breath".
They were one of the subtlest bands of their time and Hearts of Fortune is a solid proof.

The Babys - Broken Heart (1977) - €10,00

The Babys are a British rock group best known for their songs "Isn't It Time" and "Every Time I Think of You".
Both songs were composed by Jack Conrad and Ray Kennedy, and each reached No. 13 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 and No. 8 on the Cashbox chart in the late 1970s.
The original Babys line-up consisted of founding member keyboardist/guitarist Michael Corby, and, in order of joining the group, vocalist/bassist John Waite, drummer Tony Brock, and guitarist Wally Stocker.

Broken Heart is The Babys second album. The album produced The Babys first big hit "Isn't It Time", which reached No. 13 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1977. Broken Heart was later released as a double album with the self-titled album The Babys.

Producer Ron Nevison seemed to help create a clearer sound and the album ranges from frantic guitar and drum solos to quiet ballads like "Silver Dreams". Waite's vocals received greater attention than in the previous album where they sounded impressive but distant.
Songwriters outside the group were included with songs by Jack Conrad and Ray Kennedy, Mike Japp and Chas Sandford.

After debuting with the Bob Ezrin and Brian Christian produced The Babys LP, John Waite and company turned to Ron Nevison to man the board for the Broken Heart recording sessions in 1977. Nevison's touch is all over the ten song sophomore effort from The Babys, as evident by the strings that accompany album opener "Wrong or Right" and grandiose closer "A Piece of the Action". The sound is cleaner, and Waite's vocals are given more attention on Broken Heart.

Issued by Chrysalis Records, Broken Heart goes heavy on ballads, while featuring the top twenty hit "Isn't It Time". Penned by Jack Conrad and Ray Kennedy, "Isn't It Time" is introduced by Michael Corby's piano work, and Waite is backed on the melodic track by The Babettes (Lisa Freeman-Roberts, Myrna Matthews and Pat Henderson). "Isn't It Time" was the first single to chart for the glam-pop-rockin' Baby's.

Buried between the A-side accessible duo of "Isn't It Time" and the mellow five-minute arrangement of "The Golden Mile", Broken Heart breaks loose with the all-about-swagger "And If You Could See Me Fly". Written by Waite, "And If You Could See Me Fly" may be the shortest cut from Broken Heart, but it packs muscle with a cool stop/start riff, cowbell fills and a hot guitar solo. Simply stated, the low-slung groove that pushes "And If You Could See Me Fly" triggers repeated spins of the two-minute-plus rocker that lays to waste every other song from Broken Heart.

The Whispers - Love Is Where You Find It (1981) - €10,00

The Whispers are an American group from Los Angeles, California, who have scored hit records since the late 1960s.
Their most successful period was in the 1980s with SOLAR Records (Sound Of Los Angeles Records), which was operated by their manager at the time, Dick Griffey.

Love Is Where You Find It is the eleventh studio album by American R&B/Soul group the Whispers.
Released on April 5, 1982, by SOLAR Records, this album reached number 1 on the Billboard Soul Albums chart.
Released after This Kind of Lovin', Love Is Where You Find It finds the group continuing its hitmaking style and boasts the production work of Leon F. Sylvers III and the Solar sound.
While the group's albums were never necessities, like the Temptations or to a lesser extent the Dramatics, the worth of the ballads and dance tracks often made the Whispers worth seeking out.
Love Is Where You Find It is no exception. The album's biggest hits -- the polished and kinetic "In the Raw" and "Emergency" -- quickly joined the pantheon of Whispers dance classics.
The near-brilliant "Turn Me Out" arguably beats them both for sheer sonic value and the witty lyrics. Unlike many of the Whispers' albums of the time, the ballads here diminish the set. The radio staple "Say Yes" may be too smooth and cloying even for Whispers devotees.
Love Is Where You Find It isn't an especially strong album, but "Turns Me Out" makes it worth looking for.

Wings - Wings Over America (1976) - €25,00

Paul McCartney and Wings (also known by their original name Wings) were a British–American rock band formed in 1971 by former Beatle Paul McCartney, his wife Linda on keyboards, session drummer Denny Seiwell, and former Moody Blues guitarist Denny Laine.
Wings were noted for frequent personnel changes along with their commercial successes, going through three lead guitarists and four drummers.
However, the core trio of the McCartneys and Laine remained intact throughout the group's existence.

Wings over America is a triple live album, released in December 1976. The album was recorded during the American leg of the band's 1975–76 Wings Over the World tour. It peaked at number 8 on the UK Albums Chart and reached number 1 on the US Billboard Top LPs & Tape chart.
In addition to including several of McCartney's hits with Wings, the album features performances of five Beatles songs: "Yesterday", "Lady Madonna", "I've Just Seen a Face", "Blackbird" and "The Long and Winding Road". The album cover was designed by Hipgnosis.

Basically, there are two things that rock bands do: they make an album and they go on tour. Since Paul McCartney fervently wanted to believe Wings was a real rock band, he had the group record an album or two and then took them on the road.
In March of 1976 he released Wings at the Speed of Sound and launched a tour of America, following which he released Wings Over America, a triple-album set that re-created an entire concert from various venues.

It was a massive set list, running over two hours and featuring 30 songs, and it was well received at the time, partially because he revived some Beatles tunes, partially because it wasn't the disaster some naysayers expected, and mostly because -- like the tour itself -- it was the first chance that millions of Beatles fans had to hear McCartney in concert properly (the Beatles had toured, to be sure, and had played before millions of people between 1963 and 1966, but as a result of the relatively primitive equipment they used and the frenzied, omnipresent screaming of the mid-'60s teen audiences at their shows, few of those present had actually "heard" the group).

Wings were never a particularly gifted band, and nowhere is that more evident than on Wings Over America.
Matters aren't really helped by the fact that the large set list gives McCartney full opportunity to show off his vast array of affected voices, from crooner to rocker to bluesman. Also, the repertory, in retrospect, is weighted too heavily toward the recent Wings albums Wings at the Speed of Sound and Band on the Run, which weren't really loaded with great tunes.
(It's also hard to believe that there were two Denny Laine vocals so early in the program, or that the concert ended with the plodding rocker "Soily," which was never released on any other McCartney album.)
In its defense, the album offers bracing renditions of "Maybe I'm Amazed" -- arguably the best of McCartney's post-Beatles songs and possibly his single greatest composition -- and "Band on the Run," as well as nicely distilling the harder side of his repertory, with a few breaks for softer songs such as "My Love" and "Silly Love Songs"; another highlight is the rippling bass sound, showing off that instrument in a manner closer in spirit to, say, a John Entwistle solo LP than to McCartney's more pop-focused studio work.

The triple LP, issued two weeks before Christmas of 1976, was priced so low that it was offered by most stores as a "loss leader" to pull customers in; what's more, the Beatles mystique was still very much attached to record and artist alike -- at the time, John Lennon had seemingly burnt out a major chunk of his talent, George Harrison was losing his popular edge and had done a disastrous 1974 American tour, and no one was expecting great things from Ringo Starr -- and it seemed like McCartney represented the part of the group's legacy that came closest to living up to fans' expectations.

Thus the album ended up selling in numbers, rivaling the likes of Frampton Comes Alive and other mega-hits of the period, and rode the charts for months.
Wings Over America is most valuable as a souvenir for hardcore fans and also as a reminder of the excitement -- beyond the actual merits of the group's work -- that attended McCartney and Wings' work in the lingering afterglow of the Beatles.

Odyssey - Hang Together (1980) - €10,00

Odyssey is originally a New York City, United States-based singing group, best known for their 1977 hit "Native New Yorker," and a series of other mainly dance and soul hits in the late 1970s and early 1980s.
Now based in the United Kingdom, the band is led and fronted by Steven Collazo and continues to perform and record.

In the United Kingdom, the band, with its diverse musical style had more chart success, totalling five Top Ten hits between 1977 and 1982. One of them, "Use It Up and Wear It Out", reached number one in the UK Singles Chart for two weeks in 1980. The UK follow-up single, "If You're Lookin' for a Way Out" had Lillian Lopez on lead vocals; the single reaching no. 6 in 1980.

Odyssey as consistent as they could have been; Hang Together, the group's third album, has more pluses than minuses but is still uneven. The more memorable songs on this 1980 LP range from the sleek "Don't Tell Me, Tell Her" to the ballad "If You're Looking for a Way Out" and the funky, Labelle-ish "Rooster Loose in the Barnyard." Meanwhile, the catchy "Down Boy" finds Odyssey experimenting with rock elements, which was a rarity for the New Yorkers.
Overall, this is a decent record, but it isn't a great one -- and Odyssey were quite capable of being consistently excellent instead of merely adequate.
Listening to Hang Together is a lot like seeing a student with above average intelligence bringing home a report card with B's and C's; those B's and C's are preferable to D's and F's, but they're still disappointing when you know that the kid is capable of bringing home straight A's.
