Though there are a few queasy pop/vocal tracks, Moroder's soundtrack to Midnight Express earns points for an array of exploratory synthesizer pieces (including "Wheel" and "Cacaphoney") as well as its opener, "Chase." One of Moroder's biggest hits, the track bounces back and forth between melodic disco and hypnotic sequencer trance just one step removed from the likes of Tangerine Dream.
'Midnight Express' despite its subterranean narrative wasn't quite as dark as it perhaps wanted to be, much the same can be said for Moroder's soundtrack which matches generic concerns as much as plot and direction. Moroder gets all claustrophobic on 'Cacaphoney', while he seems more interested in laying down tags on 'Chase' though it is the best track here, over 8 swirling minutes capturing Alan Parker's wandering aesthetics. Chris Bennett adds an interesting take on the main theme to close the proceedings.
Much like the movie itself, it's a brittle affair strengthened by these unexpected bursts of light.
