Edith Piaf - Edith Piaf (Lp) (1970) - €4,99

Édith Piaf born Édith Giovanna Gassion, 9 December 1915 – 10 October 1963) was a French singer noted as France's national chanteuse and one of the country's most widely known international stars.

Piaf's music was often autobiographical, and she specialized in chanson réaliste and torch ballads about love, loss and sorrow. Her most widely known songs include "La Vie en rose" (1946), "Non, je ne regrette rien" (1960), "Hymne à l'amour" (1949), "Milord" (1959), "La Foule" (1957), "L'Accordéoniste" (1940), and "Padam, padam..." (1951).

Since her death in 1963, several biographies and films have studied her life, including 2007's La Vie en rose. Piaf has become one of the most celebrated performers of the 20th century.

In 1935, Piaf was discovered in the Pigalle area of Paris by nightclub owner Louis Leplée, whose club Le Gerny's off the Champs-Élysées was frequented by the upper and lower classes alike. He persuaded her to sing despite her extreme nervousness, which, combined with her height of only 142 centimetres (4 ft 8 in) ,inspired him to give her the nickname that would stay with her for the rest of her life and serve as her stage name, La Môme Piaf (Paris slang meaning "The Waif Sparrow" or "The Little Sparrow"). Leplée taught her the basics of stage presence and told her to wear a black dress, which became her trademark apparel.

Xavier - Point Of Pleasure (Lp) (1982) - €10,00

Xavier are an uptempo modern funk group, with a solid 80’s groove. Xavier Smith leads the group on vocals and guitar, and Ayanna little also sings lead vocals.
The underrated album 'Point Of Pleasure' by Xavier. This album is nowadays highly demanded by funk/boogie fans. 'Point Of Pleasure' that contains seven fabulous boogie, dance tunes is originally released on Liberty Records in 1982.
The production of 'Point Of Pleasure' is done by Terry Philips, and Rahni Harris, the latter produced also for Dayton (Hot Fun/This Time), Melba Moore (Never Say Never/A Lot OF love), and Willie Collins.
Great names, thus this album has contains the same quality as the mentioned artists, groups.

“Point Of Pleasure” is a disco/funk LP by the group Xavier released in 1982. Bootsy Collins and George Clinton both contributed to two tracks on this P-funk influenced record, the tracks “Work That Sucker To Death” and “Do It To The Max”.

The first track on this album 'Work That Sucker To Death' a great dance, funk track with outstanding vocals. Favourite #1.
On this track George Clinton is featured with his typical voice. This track charted into the top 10 of the US billboard R&B Album chart. 'Rock Me, Sock Me' the second track, favourite #2, is a up-tempo dance tune with great vocals and typical eighties funky, groovy synthesizer bass line done by Rahni Harris.
The slow tune 'Dial The Love Man' has an great bass line. 'Do It To The Max' another down-tempo funky track, favourite #3, with the great vocals of Ayanna Little, who did all the female vocals on this album. The fabulous boogie track 'What Goes Around', favourite #4, also contains typical eighties synth loops by Rahni Harris. The slow tempo 'Truly Devoted' is good but in comparison to the other tracks the worst.
The last album track is 'Love Is One The One' a superb boogie track with a fantastic bass groove, and that is #5.

Val Young - Seduction (Lp) (1985) - €10,00

Valaria Marie Young (born June 13, 1958) is an American recording artist from Detroit, Michigan, who achieved success during the 1980s. She is now based in Los Angeles

She was discovered by George Clinton, who hired her as a background vocalist in 1977 for The Brides of Funkenstein, one of the many acts in his Funkadelic stable. In 1980, she recorded and toured with Roy Ayers. Young became a background vocalist for The Gap Band the same year and was featured with the group on the funk hit "Oops Up Side Your Head". She recorded five albums with the group and also toured with them.

It was not until she met Rick James that she became popular as a solo artist. James promoted her as the "Black Marilyn Monroe", and brought Young to Berry Gordy, who signed her to Motown Records on James' recommendation. James produced her debut album Seduction, which was released in 1985, it included the singles "Mind Games" and the title track "Seduction", as well as "Piece of My Heart" and "If You Should Ever Be Lonely", which were successful follow-ups in 1986.

1985 was a memorable year for Rick James; that year, he recorded Glow (one of his more adventurous albums of the 1980s), produced and wrote the Mary Jane Girls' All Four You, and did some work with former Brides of Funkenstein member Val Young (who Motown signed on James' recommendation). James' influence is strong on Young's first solo album, Seduction -- he wrote and produced two of the songs ("Piece of My Heart" and the intoxicating title track), while the rest of the LP was produced by Fred Jenkins and Stone City Band keyboardist Levi Ruffin Jr. Some of the Mary Jane Girls contribute background vocals, and Young's accompaniment includes members of James' Stone City Band
But Young is certainly her own person -- in fact, she wrote or co-wrote the lyrics for six of the nine songs.
Though parts of Seduction are very James-influenced, "Let's Fall in Love" and "Tellin' Me Lies" are closer to the type of material that Kashif would have produced for Evelyn "Champagne" King in the 1980s.
And while Young is an R&B singer first and foremost, she incorporates pop/rock elements with pleasing results on "Mind Games" and the playful, slightly new wave-ish "Come Hang Out."
This good to excellent album did moderately well, but not as well as it should have -- and regrettably, Young never made it to the next level commercially.

Luisa Fernandez - Spanish Dancer (Lp) (1979) - €10,00

Luisa Fernandez (born 14 August, 1961) is a Spanish-born, Germany based pop singer. She is perhaps best known for her hit single, "Lay Love on You" from 1978.

Her talent was officially discovered in a contest at the age of 15. A deal with Warner Brothers and her first single hits in the disco era in Europe followed.
After meeting her future husband, they formed the duo "Luisa Fernandez and Peter Kent" and had several European pop hits in Spanish, amongst them Solo por ti, that can be heard on European radio stations even today.
The Spanish Luisa Fernandez successfully released the single "Lay Love On You" in 1977, which has a very special rhythm. This rhythm quickly became her trademark: it was found in 1978 on her album "Disco Darling" which she recorded in Hamburg, Germany.
The piece that opens this lp is a new version of "Granada", a standard dating from 1932. Note that in 1977, the Spanish duo 'Baccara', produced in Germany, had already produced a disco version of this classic.
But the flagship title of the "Disco Darling" lp is "Give Love A Second Chance", which is engraved as a single.
In 1979, Luisa unveils het 2nd album "Spanish Dancer", her new opus co-written, co-arranged and produced by David Parker. The success of this album is mixed. We nevertheless discover this good "Funky Dancer" which, contrary to what one might think, is not funky but very disco. Luisa's voice during the chorus strangely resembles that of another singer produced at the same time in Germany: Sandra Lauer of the disco group 'Arabesque'.
The album spawned three singles: "We All Love You Superman", "New York Dance" and "Spanish Dancer" all released in 1979.

Still for 1979, Luisa recorded a separate single, "Dead End Street", whose intro was pumped on that of the title "Rasputin" from 'Boney M'. But the sequel turns out to be rather disappointing.
Several other singles will be there during the 80's: thus, his "Love Me Tonight" from 1980 will still surf on disco.

Soundtrack - For Your Eyes Only (music by: Bill Conti) (Lp) (1981) - €6,99

For Your Eyes Only is the soundtrack for the 12th James Bond film of the same name.
The theme song was written by Bill Conti (music) and Michael Leeson (lyrics), and performed by Sheena Easton. The song was later nominated for both an Academy Award and Golden Globe in 1982.
Easton also made Bond film history as the first (and, to date, only) artist to perform the theme song on-screen during the opening title sequence.

Originally, the band Blondie was approached to write and perform the theme song for the film. They produced a song also called For Your Eyes Only that they turned in to the producers, however, this was rejected because the company wanted the Conti song and the band refused, and subsequently asked Easton to record an entirely new theme. Blondie eventually released their song on the 1982 album The Hunter. The track Make It Last All Night, performed by Rage and used for the scene at hitman Gonzales' Spanish poolside, is notable for lyrics more suggestive than in almost any other Bond film.

When the James Bond film series entered the 1980s, the producers decided it was time to give the series a makeover. The result was For Your Eyes Only, a tougher film that downplayed the gimmicks and comic book elements that dominated the Bond films of the 1970s.
This film was also noticeable for replacing regular series soundtrack composer John Barry with Bill Conti, a composer best known for his work on the Rocky films. Conti keeps For Your Eyes Only's score full of symphonic grandeur and spy film theatrics, but also adds several new elements to update the sound to fit the early 1980s.
For instance, Conti adds elements of dance and funk music to the action cues: "A Drive in the Country" and "Melina's Revenge" both work funky bass lines, roaring electric guitar leads, and whooping synthesizer lines in with the standard orchestral elements.
The modernized tone also extends to the film's Sheena Easton theme song: it replaces the lush strings and brassy orchestrations that typically dominated Bond theme songs with a minimalist style built on synthesizers.
However, Conti proves elsewhere that he could comfortably write music in the traditional vein without utilizing any electronic or pop elements: "Take Me Home" is a lovely romantic interlude that highlights a gentle flugel horn solo against a backdrop of lush orchestrations, and "St. Cyril's Monastery" is a taut suspense cue that builds from atmospheric strings into a brassy reinterpretation of the "James Bond Theme." Purists may complain that complain that the pop elements Conti incorporates into this score date it, but there is no denying that the overall score is tight and skillfully written. In the end, For Your Eyes Only stands as one of the best James Bond film scores of the 1980s.

Rick Wakeman - The Myths And Legends Of King Arthur And The Knights Of The Round Table (LP) (1975) - €7,99

The Myths and Legends of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table is the second studio album by English keyboardist Rick Wakeman, released on 27 March 1975 by A&M Records
It is a concept album based on the stories and people of the King Arthur legend.
Wakeman started to write the music in 1974 while recovering from a heart attack and recorded it with his five-piece band the English Rock Ensemble, the New World Orchestra, and the English Chamber Choir

Rick Wakeman's third solo album is among his best, as he employs his vast array of keyboards to their full extent, musically describing the characters pertaining to the days of King Arthur's reign.
With orchestra and choir included, although a little less prevalent than on Journey, he musically addresses the importance and distinguishing characteristics of each figure through the use of multiple synthesizers and accompanying instruments. "Lady of the Lake" is given a mystical, enchanted feel, perpetrated by a more subtle use of piano and synthesizer, while the battle of "Sir Lancelot and the Black Knight" is made up of a barrage of feuding keyboard runs and staccato riffs, musically recounting the intensity of the duel.
But it's on "Merlin the Magician" where Wakeman truly shines, as the whimsy and peculiarity of this fabled figure is wonderfully conjured up through the frenzy of the synthesizer. As one of Wakeman's most famous pieces, it is here that his astounding musicianship is laid out for all to hear, a marvelous bisque of keyboard artistry.
The album's entirety is a sensational execution of Wakeman's adroitness, and with vocals from Ashley Holt and Gary Pickford Hopkins, it still stands along with Journey to the Center of the Earth and The Six Wives of Henry VIII as one of his most astute pieces.

Upon his return to England from his North American tour, Wakeman and his band retreated to Morgan Studios in Willesden, London to record King Arthur from 16 October 1974 to 10 January 1975. The line-up of Wakeman's band had changed by the time of recording, with Gary Pickford-Hopkins and Ashley Holt on lead vocals, Jeffrey Crampton on acoustic and electric guitars, Roger Newell on bass, Barney James on drums, and John Hodgson on percussion. They were joined by the New World Orchestra, an ensemble formed by musicians picked by David Katz that included members of the London Symphony Orchestra, conductor David Measham, the English Chamber Choir with choirmaster Guy Protheroe, and the Nottingham Festival Vocal Group. Before recording could begin, the band had to wait for their equipment to be transported from the US and repaired, after the roadies had damaged the flight cases carrying their instruments. Rehearsals then took place for around two and a half weeks. An early idea for the album had engineer Paul Tregurtha inform Wakeman that what he wanted was "technically impossible", partly due to the lack of available tracks on the recording machine to produce his desired final mix.

Wakeman encountered some difficulty with the songwriting as many of the stories described in the books gave different accounts. After reading eight books himself, he picked the details he found the most "colourful" which included taking a passage from a children's book on the subject. He settled on four widely known stories and two lesser known, and proceeded to adapt them to music and lyrics. Much of the album was based around the three swords based around the legend: the sword Arthur pulled out from the stone and anvil, the Excalibur which some believe was instead handed to Arthur by the Lady of the Lake, and the one associated to Galahad. Wakeman incorporated ideas from his personal life into the music, he said: "It's as much about me as Arthur."

"Guinevere" was a song that Wakeman had arranged six years prior to recording the album. Wakeman wrote violin arrangements for "Sir Lancelot and the Black Knight" that were so fast for the players, biographer Dan Wooding wrote they "collapsed with laughter" upon viewing the score. After some false starts, they played the music correctly after Wakeman instructed them they play twice as fast as he originally wanted. "I thought I'd teach the ones who were cocky a lesson". "Merlin the Magician" is in three parts; Wakeman had read several descriptions of the character and conjured the image of "a little old man preparing his potions", so he therefore introduces the song with a quiet theme. One book depicted Merlin working in the basement of a castle, "surrounded by bottles and liquids like a mad professor", which inspired the heavier second theme. The piano and banjo section arose from a story that involved Merlin falling in love and chasing after a young girl, who eventually shuts him in a cave where he dies.

Jan Akkerman - Live (Lp) (1978) - €10,00

This Jan Akkerman record is a real gem! After firs spin I was convinced this by far his best live album. The material comes mainly from his self-titled record (1977), though Tommy (of the Eruption suite) of Focus is added and two new compositions in the spirit of the self-titled Jan Akkerman album.
The recording of this live album is perfect, nothing more can be expected, not even today.

Jan Akkerman is ex-guitarist of Dutch prog band Focus. In his solo career he concentrated on jazz-rock/fusion and some historical lute-guitar playing. Though at first (Profile, Tabernakel) Jan akkerman would use his rockin' electric guitars most of the time, in 1977 Jan decided to become the master of the clean jazz-guitar.
This resulted in the 1977 self-titled album with clean guitars, a great band and the best of string arrangements. The compositions had a relaxing but slightly magical vibe and some up-tempo moments. Most of the compositions of this record were played on this live album. Now, the problem Akkerman and band had to face was the fact that on the album these unbelievable string arrangements made a big contribution to the end result, but they weren't able to get such an arrangement for their tour.

The problem was successfully solved by adding an inspired percussionist (I love his contribution) and some synths that both helped to establish a more progressive climate, though the main genre would still be fusion. The two minuted atmospheric synth opening track by Jasper Van 't Hoff really gets me warm for the rest of the album!A nice track from the Focus era, Tommy, is played with precision but the great vocals of Thijs van Leer are a loss. Still the band makes a great symphonic jazz track with that magical feel and the great guitar solo's (this time clean) of Jan Akkerman.

Conclusion. This recording is perfect, the tracks are great, there's a magical progressive climate on this concert, all instruments are played perfect, some problems concerning the arrangements were solved very intelligent and Jan Akkerman plays plain beautiful.
There's only one letdown: the album is short. Running for 35 minutes this doesn't live up to the standards of these days. Still this album is highly recommended to basically every-one who can hear the difference between elevator music and great Fusion.

Bette Midler - Live At Last (2Lp) (1977) - €20,00

Live at Last is the first live album by American singer Bette Midler, a two-disc set released in 1977, Midler's fourth album release on the Atlantic Records label. The album spawned from her live, recorded performance, "The Depression Tour" in Cleveland, entitled "The Bette Midler Show".

The double-LP live album phenomenon was utilized in 1973 on Around the World With Three Dog Night to collect loads of hits and release them in another format.
Three years later, Bob Seger's Live Bullet, J. Geils Band's Blow Your Face Out, and Frampton Comes Alive solidified the double disc as a way to bring important rock artists to the forefront. Come 1977, the Rolling Stones' Love You Live failed to live up to their single disc Get Your Ya Ya's Out or any of the brilliant bootleg performances of theirs proliferating. In the middle of all this arrives the very strong in-concert artist, Bette Midler, with her fourth album for Atlantic.
This undated (probably 1976) performance from the Cleveland Music Hall, Cleveland, OH, does a decent job of capturing the magic of Midler. Having a show stretched across four sides was essential for this performer; the brilliance of her rendition of the Supremes' 1970 hit "Up the Ladder to the Roof" takes it out of the Motown context and brings it to Midler's Andrews Sisters world of girl group devotion.
Segueing into a driving "Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy" answers the question asked in the opening medley of her signature tune, "Friends," with Ringo Starr's "Oh My My," Midler being astonished that anyone would ask the question if she can boogie. Another live LP, Divine Madness, was released only three years after this when she was riding her fame from the film The Rose, and that single disc concentrated on the comedienne's song performances ("Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy" gets reprised there), while 1985's single disc Mud Will Be Flung Tonight gave the fans her funny bits; thankfully with four sides of music and fun, Live at Last is allowed to run the gamut.
With an adult contemporary (dare it be said, Vegas-style) act like Bette Midler, the sad thing is that bootlegs and live tapes don't proliferate. It's a shame, as she has lots to offer on every show, and when you think about it, only one double-live disc in a career this rich and this lengthy is unfair to both the artist and her fans.
There are some brilliant moments here; along with "Up the Ladder to the Roof," her version of Johnny Mercer's "I'm Drinking Again" is better than the studio take on her self-titled second disc. "Delta Dawn" is wonderful, as are the up-tempo "Do You Wanna Dance" and John Prine's "Hello in There.
" Midler performs Neil Young's "Birds," tells raunchy jokes so cliché that they depend upon her brilliant delivery, and has her personality captured in audio form splendidly. There's a very interesting "intermission" which features a Tom Dowd studio production of "You're Moving out Today," a tune written by Bruce Roberts, Midler, and Carole Bayer Sager, who simultaneously released a studio version the same year. It was a neat trick sliding it onto this release.
Live at Last has lots to offer and has yet to be appreciated as the pure document that it is. Atlantic should be given a thumbs up for giving their performer the chance to artistically breathe here.
A similarly misunderstood Top 40 artist from this era was the Guess Who, and it took 30 years for that group's pivotal 1972 Live at the Paramount album to get the full treatment. Luckily for fans of Midler, she -- and they -- were spared the indignity that may have cost the Guess Who serious FM radio time. Classic stuff exists in the grooves of Live at Last.

Frank Marino & Mahogany Rush - Live (Lp) (1978) - €8,99

Mahogany Rush was a Canadian rock band led by guitarist Frank Marino. Formed in Montreal, Quebec in 1969, the band had its peak of popularity in the 1970s, playing venues as large as California Jam II.

The band is perhaps best known for Marino's soaring lead guitar which bears a strong resemblance to the playing of Jimi Hendrix
Long-term members of the band have included bassist Paul Harwood and drummer Jimmy Ayoub, and Frank's brother Vince on guitar; Frank Marino is the sole continuous member of the band.
Starting in the late 1970s, the group recorded and toured as Frank Marino & Mahogany Rush.

Mahogany Rush wasn't as huge a name in 1970s hard rock/heavy metal as Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, or Deep Purple, but the power trio commanded a loyal, good-sized following and provided its share of five-star albums. One of them is this live album, which was recorded during a U.S. tour in late 1977 and came out on vinyl the following year. Mahogany knew how to burn on stage, and this excellent LP really captures the vitality of its 1970s concerts.
No one who is seriously into hard rock and metal should be deprived of hearing singer/guitarist Frank Marino let loose on live versions of "Dragonfly," "Electric Reflections of War," and "The Answer." The band is equally captivating on sweaty performances of Jimi Hendrix's "Purple Haze," Chuck Berry's "Johnny B. Goode," and Muddy Waters' "I'm a King Bee." Some fans were disappointed because Live is a single LP instead of a two-LP set -- many of the gems that Mahogany performed on-stage in 1977 were omitted.
The band cites space limitations as the reason, although one suspects that licensing restrictions had something to do with what was and wasn't included. But while Live may not be the perfect document of Mahogany Rush on-stage in the '70s, it is consistently rewarding and is enthusiastically recommended to hard rockers and metalheads.

Gérard Lenorman - Gérard Lenorman (Lp) (1979) - €4,99

Gérard Lenorman is a French pop singer whose career spans several decades, from the late '60s through the remainder of the century.
He was most popular during the mid-'70s, when he was associated with CBS Records, through the early '80s, when he was associated with Carrère.
Born on February 9, 1945, in Bénouville, Calvados, he made his recording debut in 1968 with a few 45 rpm releases on the AZ label. Between 1969 and 1970 he was associated with the Festival label, on which he released several 45 rpm singles and his full-length solo album debut, Gérard Lenorman (1969).
In 1971 he moved to CBS Records, where his popularity began to peak around mid-decade.
His tenure on the label, which lasted until 1977, was productive, including a multitude of singles as well as albums including Les Matins d'Hiver (1972), Quelque Chose et Moi (1974), Caroline (1975), Olympia 75 (1975), Drôles de Chansons (1976), Noëls du Monde (1976), and Au-delà des Rêves (1977). Lenorman then began a lengthy tenure on Carrère from 1977 to 1983 that also proved fruitful, including a multitude of singles as well as the albums Nostalgies (1978), Boulevard de l'Océan (1979), Olympia 79 (1979), La Clairière de l'Enfance (1980), ...D'Amour (1981), Paris sur Scène -- Palais des Congrès (1982), and Le Soleil des Tropiques (1983).
By the mid-'80s, Lenorman's popularity had begun to recede, and his output became increasingly sporadic as he moved from one label to another in search of success, beginning with the release of Fière & Nippone (1985) on Ariola.
Nonetheless, he was chosen to represent France in the Eurovision Song Contest in 1988 with "Chanteur de Charme" and continued to release new albums from time to time, including latter-day efforts such as La Raison de L'Autre (2000).
The end of the noughties saw a flurry of activity from the French crooner, with a Best of Gerard Lenorman released in 2007 that was followed up with 2011’s Duos de Mes Chansons
The record marked his first studio work in 11 years and featured collaborations with artists such as Florent Pagny, Tina Arena and Patrick Fiori
