Kid Creole And The Coconuts - Fresh Fruit In Foreign Places (LP) (1981) - €10,00

Kid Creole and the Coconuts is an American musical group created by August Darnell with Andy Hernandez and Adriana Kaegi
Its music incorporates a variety of styles and influences, in particular a mix of disco and Latin American, Caribbean, and Calloway styles conceptually inspired by the big band era.
The Coconuts are a trio of female backing vocalists/dancers, founded and originally choreographed and costumed by Adriana Kaegi

Fresh Fruit in Foreign Places is a concept album in the form of a musical travelogue. Describing the album's concept to The New York Times, band leader August Darnell said:
One way of looking at the journey Kid Creole undertakes on the record is as a justification of the many strains that coexist in our music. The journey is autobiographical in that it explains how the music came to be the music that it is. Kid Creole and his crew visit various islands and are influenced by the music and culture of each one. ...You don't just leave your influences behind when you move on in life; you take them with you.

An "album" in the best sense of the word, this is enlightened "mulatto music" for the masses. Standout tracks include "Schweinerei," and "In the Jungle," and of course "Me No Pop I," whose twelve inch mix is included in this remaster. But do yourself a favor and enjoy this album as the complete work of art it was intended to be.
Much of the album involves not just fanciful plays on words, but fun with language (and languages) itself, a truly African Diaspora oriented notion. Another wonderful aspect of this music is its explicitly self-aware historicism and playful incorporation of a 1930's and 1940's big band jazz (New York style as well as Island style) aesthetic.
Many of the themes explored here were already in evidence with Dr. Buzzard's Original Savannah Band, but they are taken to a new level in this work. Much of the credit for that goes to the musicians, particularly the legendary Winston Grennon, whose drumming is outstanding. Above all, August Darnell deserves beaucoup credit for assembling such top-notch talent.

Martha And The Muffins - Trance And Dance (LP) (1980) - €7,99

Martha and the Muffins are a Canadian rock band, active from 1977 to the present. Although they only had one major international hit single "Echo Beach" under their original band name, they had a number of hits in their native Canada, and the core members of the band also charted in Canada and internationally as M + M

Trance and Dance (Dindisc LP, VL 2207) was Martha and the Muffins' 1980 second album, and like the previous Metro Music was produced by Mike Howlett. The album included "Motorbikin’", the band's cover of Chris Spedding's 1976 UK hit.

The album sounds rushed and disjointed, as if the band were pressured into capitalizing on the instant fame achieved with their debut.
In fact, some of the songs on this release date back to before Metro Music, indicating that the band did not have time to write enough new songs for an album. As with their debut, the band themselves play wonderfully, and there are some wonderful songs on it, such as the highlight, "Symptomatic Love." Martha Johnson's vocals for this track are flawless, and the song features great lyrics that in their apparent simplicity say a great deal. "Suburban Dream," "Be Blasé," "Luna Park," and "Was Ezo" are other standout cuts that demonstrate the brilliance of this band.
Once again, the production is something of a problem, as the energy of the band (as clearly demonstrated on the free live EP enclosed with initial pressings) is not caught in the studio.
Quite simply, Mike Howlett did not know how to produce this band (this was to be the last album he produced for them).
This album marks the first time the band covered a song, Chris Spedding's "Motorbikin'," an interesting choice, but not one that suits Martha and the Muffins
This album was also to be the last featuring the original lineup, as Martha Ladly would leave to pursue a solo career shortly after the release, and Carl Finkle simply quit the band. Overall, something of a disappointment after such a brilliant start.

Ultravox - Quartet (LP) (1982) - €10,00

Quartet is the sixth studio album by the British new wave band Ultravox. The album peaked at no.6 on the UK Albums Chart.

With the successes of Vienna and its follow-up, Rage in Eden, Ultravox's position in the music scene was unassailable, further fortified by frontman Midge Ure's foray into solo-dom with the summer 1982 hit cover of the Walker Brothers' "No Regrets." The band's "Reap the Wild Wind" followed it up the U.K. chart that fall, a taster for the band's sixth album. And what a portentous taste it was.
While "Wind" buffeted and whooshed once again around nostalgia for a past never lived, "Hymn" (its melody lifted from "Mourning Star" by Ure's last band, the Zones) wrestled with faith in a faithless age and prayed its way up the chart later that fall, while the dirge "Visions in Blue" saw the spring caught in its icy grip. But it was the fourth song spun off the album, "We Came to Dance," that best defined the overall themes of the set. Having helped create a movement renowned for its fashion victims and superficiality, Ultravox recoiled from the Frankenstein they'd birthed.
"The Song (We Go)" may have been a cry of welcome, but both "Dance" and "Serenade" make clear the music scene's terrifying capacity to unleash both Dionysian abandon and militaristic conformity.
"When the Scream Subsides" further fuels the album's existential angst, which reaches its emotional nadir on the suicidal "Cut and Run."
With their toe-tapping rhythms, billowing synths, and rousing melodies, one is often tempted to ignore the darkness of Ultravox's themes, but with Quartet, the band deliberately made that nigh on impossible.

La Seine - Like The River (LP) (1976) - €10,00

La Seine was an American rock band that existed in 1975 and 1976.
It was billed as a band full of talent at the time.
They released one album, 'Like The River', which wasn't a success, but to my ears it sounds great.

Among the members were Tris Imboden, that later became the drummer in the band Chicago.

One single was pulled from the album, 'Tango All Night', which made it to the dutch titparade in 1976.
Two other singles were released from this album: "It's A Pirates Life" and "I'm Down".
They gave up in 1976

Claudja Barry - Made In Hong Kong (LP) (1981) - €7,99

Claudja Barry (born on 1952) is a Jamaican singer, songwriter and actress. Her successful songs were "Down and Counting", "Boogie Woogie Dancin' Shoes" and others. As an actress, she is known for appearing in the European versions of stage musicals AC/DC and Catch My Soul

Barry had some success with her recordings.
In 1981, she made a successful foray into new wave/Hi-NRG music. Made in Hong Kong is Claudja Barry's fourth album, released in 1981. By this album, she had shed her "disco diva" image thus avoiding much of the American disco blacklash at the time.
It featured the lead single "Radio Action", which became a moderate club hit peaking at No. 57.

Of all of Barry's output from the '70s through the '90s, 1981's Made in Hong Kong is the most eclectic and energetic. While earlier albums such as Sweet Dynamite and The Girl Most Likely offer solid rhythm-section arrangements, they often lack sturdy hooks and cohesive melodies.
Here, there's no shortage of either cleverness or catchiness and, as a result, Barry sounds thoroughly into her performance.
"Radio Action" relays the first-person tale of an aspiring band vying for airtime atop a swirl of Euro-synths, while guitar power chords and country-tinged background vocals converge on "Don't Talk to the Wind." Equally compelling, the funky, down-tempo "Take Me to the River" merges colorfully punctuated bass and percussion with twangy guitars, and "Love Control" forges ahead with a sterling dance-pop arrangement and buoyant vocals.
Throughout the sequence, Barry shines with a sharp soprano that incorporates touches of jazz, opera, and rock into a unique whole. Made in Hong Kong is a delightful treat for not only Barry's dedicated dance fans, but also Top 40, rock, and soul pundits with an ear for something different.

Chic - Real People (LP) (1980) - €10,00

Real People is the fourth studio album by American R&B band Chic, released on Atlantic Records in 1980. It includes the singles “Rebels Are We“, “Real People” and “26”.

The album was one of four written and produced by Bernard Edwards and Nile Rodgers in 1980, the other three being Sister Sledge‘s Love Somebody Today, Sheila and B. Devotion‘s King of the World, and Diana Ross‘ multi-platinum selling album Diana.

In the early ’80s, Chic’s influence on other artists was hard to miss. Change, Fantasy, Luther Vandross, the Talking Heads, Grace Jones and Queen were among the many artists who were incorporating elements of the Chic sound.
It was ironic and quite amusing to hear some members of the “Death to Disco!” brigade blaring Queen’s “Another One Bites the Dust” on their car stereos during the summer of 1980, for that funk-rock ditty was obviously based on “Good Times.”
But Chic itself was seeing its popularity start to fade, and fans were realizing that the group had reached its creative peak in the late ’70s. Like other albums that Chic recorded in the early ’80s, Real People is competent but less than essential.
Diehard fans will find that while “Rebels Are We,” “I Got Protection” and “Chip off the Old Block” are likable and catchy, they aren’t in a class with “Good Times” or “Le Freak.” This is a decent album, but it’s also the work of a group that was past its prime.

Eddie Rabbitt - Horizon (LP) (1980) - €4,99

Edward Thomas Rabbitt (November 27, 1941 – May 7, 1998) was an American country music singer and songwriter.
His career began as a songwriter in the late 1960s, springboarding to a recording career after composing hits such as "Kentucky Rain" for Elvis Presley in 1970 and "Pure Love" for Ronnie Milsap in 1974. Later in the 1970s, Rabbitt helped to develop the crossover-influenced sound of country music prevalent in the 1980s with such hits as "Suspicions", "I Love a Rainy Night" (a number-one hit single on the Billboard Hot 100), and "Every Which Way but Loose" (the theme from the film of the same title). His duets "Both to Each Other (Friends and Lovers)" with Juice Newton and "You and I" with Crystal Gayle later appeared on the soap operas Days of Our Lives and All My Children

Horizon
is the sixth studio album of country artist Eddie Rabbitt. It was released in 1980 under the Elektra Records label.
The album produced two singles, both of which reached number one on country charts.
The lead-off single "Drivin' My Life Away" reached number 5 on the Billboard 100 and 9 the Adult Contemporary chart.
The other single, "I Love a Rainy Night" reached number one on all three charts, the only single in Rabbitt's career to ever do so.

This is Rabbitt's rockabilly release. "I Love a Rainy Night" and "Drivin' My Life Away" set the pace for side one: Sun-inspired, guitar-based productions, heavy on the echo.
Side two is a bit ballad-heavy, though most of the tracks stand up well individually. "That's Just the Way It Is" is something of a forerunner for "Someone Could Lose a Heart Tonight."

Side one
1.  I Love A Rainy Night - 3:08
2.  747 - 3:05
3.  Drivin' My Life Away - 3:14

5.  Rockin' With My Baby - 2:27

Side two
1.  I Need To Fall In Love Again - 2:30
2.  So Deep In Your Love - 3:23
3.  What Will I Write - 2:59
4.  Pretty Lady - 3:25

Soundtrack - Salsa (LP) (1988) - €10,00

Salsa is a 1988 romance film directed by Boaz Davidson and starring Robby Rosa, Rodney Harvey, Angela Alvarado and Miranda Garrison
The film, about a Puerto Rican dancer who decides to enter a salsa dancing contest, earned a Razzie Award nomination for Rosa as Worst New Star.
In a nightly escape from his day job as a mechanic, Rico (Robby Rosa) enters his true element: the wild exuberance of "La Luna" , a salsa club located in East Los Angeles, California. Dreaming of making himself and Vicky (Angela Alvarado), his girlfriend the "King and Queen of Salsa", Rico pours all his energy into winning La Luna's Grand Salsa Competition. But when Luna (Miranda Garrison), the club's gorgeous owner sets her sights on making Rico her dance partner, Rico must decide what drives him, his ambition or his heart.

The movie Salsa is such a great movie and it is no wonder why the soundtrack is so great too. I can't get bord of watching one and listening to the other over and over so many times in a row. The different beats of all the songs, make you want to get up and dance. On the soundtrack there are so many great songs. Songs such as Margarita, Cali Pachanguero, Your Love, Good Lovin', Under My Skin, I Know, and Puerto Rico. Personally, my top 2 favorites are I Know, and Puerto Rico. The beats are just awsome. It's a great salsa soundtrack.

The Real Roxanne - The Real Roxanne (LP) (1988) - €10,00

Adelaida Martinez (born January 11, 1967), better known by her stage name the Real Roxanne, is an American female hip hop MC who recorded for Select Records.
Martinez was born in Brooklyn, New York. In the 1980s she, Roxanne Shante, and others were engaged in the Roxanne Wars, a series of answer records inspired by UTFO's hit song "Roxanne, Roxanne", being the officially sanctioned artist in response to all of the answer records.

It took her until 1988 to release an album, by which time the Roxanne fad had run its course; still, the self-titled release packed a wallop thanks to producers Jam Master Jay, Howie Tee, and Full Force, plus the Real Roxanne's own forceful, sassy personality

Roxanne Shanté's the real Roxanne. This one's the real Lisa Lisa--smart, fast-talking, Puerto Rican and proud, up on the get down. By working her fine brown frame off without ever taking chance one, she verifies rap's pop scope, from Hurby Luv Bug's cute stuff to Howie Tee's dense samples.
Also scores two out of three half-sung slow ones, including a day-in-the-life-of-a-rapper-and-aren't-you-jealous? that can only be described as a modest boast.
Would I like all this as much if a guy did it? Of course not.

Mel & Kim - F.L.M. (LP) (1987) - €10,00

Mel and Kim were a British pop duo, consisting of sisters Melanie and Kim Appleby. Originally managed by Alan Whitehead, they achieved success between 1986 and 1988, before Melanie, who had been diagnosed with cancer, died in January 1990 at the age of 23.

F.L.M. is the only studio album by British pop duo Mel and Kim. It was released on 13 April 1987 by Supreme Records. The album peaked at number three on the UK Albums Chart and has been certified platinum by the British Phonographic Industry (BPI).

Three successful singles are included on the album: "Showing Out" (number three on the UK Singles Chart), "Respectable" (number one) and "F.L.M." (number seven).

The album was predominantly written and produced by Stock Aitken Waterman, and contained a mixture of house-infused productions and downtempo, soulful songs. One track, "I'm the One Who Really Loves You", was originally recorded in 1986 by Austin Howard. This song was considered for release as the fourth single, however, it was only released in South Africa and North America where it was issued with remixes by Clivillés & Cole.

Two other songs from F.L.M. would go on to be recorded by other Stock Aitken Waterman-produced artists; "More Than Words Can Say", which was only released as a single in Scandinavia, was also recorded by Carol Hitchcock and Hazell Dean, while Sinitta and Pepsi and Shirlie both recorded reworked versions of album closer, "Who's Gonna Catch You".

Dan Fogelberg - Exiles (LP) (1987) - €10,00

Exiles is the tenth album by American singer-songwriter Dan Fogelberg, released in 1987 (see 1987 in music).
It is best remembered for the minor hits "Lonely in Love" and "She Don't Look Back".

Clearly Dan Fogelberg's most disappointing album, Exiles was an obvious attempt at creating an edgier, more contemporary sound. It's not that Fogelberg doesn't have a powerful rock voice or the ability to turn up the volume successfully, it's just that aside from "Lonely in Love," the songwriting here is not among his best. Even with the support of a stellar lineup, including Bob Glaub, Larry Klein, Joe Lala, Rick Marotta, Andy Newmark, and Timothy B. Schmit, among others, most of the music comes off as misguided at best.
Oddly enough, the album's release coincided with the advent of classic rock radio, which played many of the artists who were Fogelberg's contemporaries as well as many of his classic songs.

Exiles is a forgotten (or even never-known) Dan Fogelberg album. It was dead on arrival, which is unfortunate, since Exiles represents a clever shift in the Fogelberg repertoire. A more frequent up-tempo rock sound is incorporated, which may confuse regular Fogelberg listeners. But some of the tracks aren't half bad. In fact, they're rather melodic, not to mention endearing and gripping at times. Give tracks A3, A4, B1, and B5 a listen in particular, and they may sway you.

When we follow the lead of the vaunted charts and critics in determining what is or isn't allowed to be considered good music, we run the risk of missing some pretty decent material. Exiles may have had poor timing, poor marketing, looked too much like Dan trying to pose as a male diva, or some random combination of the musical planets not aligning, but when taken at face value the album holds up very well. I put this one as Fogelberg's third best album, behind The Innocent Age and Phoenix.

Penny McLean - Lady Bump (LP) (1975) - €4,99

Gertrude Wirschinger, better known as Penny McLean (born 4 November 1948), is an Austrian vocalist who initially gained acclaim with the disco music act Silver Convention, but also had exposure as a single recording artist.
As a solo singer, she is most remembered for her million seller "Lady Bump". She is also an author.

In 1975 McLean made part of the German group Silver Convention, a group that also included Linda G. Thompson and Ramona Wulf and had hits such as "Save me" and "Fly, Robin, Fly". McLean planned to do an album as a solo artist and release as the first single the song Lady Bump. The album was produced by Michael Kunze and arranged by Sylvester Levay.

Lady Bump is the debut album of Austrian-born singer Penny McLean. It was released in 1975, while Penny was part of the group Silver Convention. The album was releasead months after her successful single "Lady Bump", and three more songs were released as singles and charted worldwide.
The first single of the album was the song "Lady Bump" which backed with "The Lady Bumps On" and was released in June 1975. The second single of the album was the song 1-2-3-4... Fire! which was Top 20 in 5 charts around the world. Her third single "Devil Eyes" released in October 1976.

Penny McLean had already released several singles as a solo artist and as a member of several groups when she became part of the Silver Convention lineup in 1975. But it wasn't until the success of Silver Convention's "Fly Robin Fly" that her own career picked up steam.
The outbreak came in the form of "Lady Bump," a chipper, slightly funky disco number that became one of the first big hits of the genre to be supported by a 12" single. Following in the footsteps of Van McCoy's "The Hustle," "Lady Bump" bears angelic background vocals and engaging strings as an enticement to listeners to "bump" along.
But most notably, the song possesses a sure-fire vocalist in McLean, who delivers the tune's irresistible hook with a zesty, soulful grit. Unfortunately, the corresponding album primarily consists of material that is derivative of its hit single, but never quite stands on its own. Michael Kunze's smooth production is indeed pleasant and there are particularly enjoyable moments to be found in "Big Bad Boy" and "Devil Eyes," but overall, the hooks are not as strong and McLean doesn't sound quite as enthused.
The landscapes of her subsequent albums, Penny and Midnight Explosion, are considerably more versatile and energetic, making Lady Bump an essential only for those particularly seeking to develop a more thorough knowledge of producer Michael Kunze's techniques.
